What is ERC-1155?

What is the token standard?

The token standard is a set of rules and functions that tokens must follow and implement. They are crucial in the Ethereum ecosystem because they ensure that assets and products built on Ethereum are compatible with each other. ERC-1155 is one such standard that aims to enhance the versatility of smart contracts and tokens on the Ethereum blockchain. It supports the creation and management of replaceable (identical and interchangeable) and non-replaceable (unique) tokens in a single smart contract.

How does ERC-1155 work?

ERC-1155 works by allowing multiple items to be stored in a single smart contract. This means that any number of items can be sent to one or more recipients in a single transaction, designed to reduce transaction costs and complexity. For example, in blockchain games with multiple items such as swords, shields, and in-game coins, ERC-1155 aims to simplify this complexity by allowing all these different items to coexist in a single smart contract. Therefore, rather than managing contracts individually for each digital project, ERC-1155 integrates them with the aim of simplifying the management of various tokens.

What are the advantages of ERC-1155?

ERC-1155 is known for its efficiency, adaptability, reduction of redundancy, security features, and support for various token types. It allows multiple token types (replaceable, non-replaceable and semi-replaceable) to be transferred in a single transaction. This efficiency is designed to reduce transaction costs and save time when using separate transactions for different token standards. However, it should be noted that if tokens are sent to the wrong address, they cannot be recovered unless the recipient decides to send them back.

How is ERC-1155 different from other token standards?

ERC-1155 is a hybrid token standard, including ERC-20 and ERC-721 token standards. ERC-20 is an alternative token standard where the tokens are identical and interchangeable, such as Bitcoin or stablecoin. On the other hand, the ERC-721 token standard is used to create irreplaceable tokens such as NFT that are unique and cannot be exchanged with other tokens. Both ERC-20 and ERC-721 use separate smart contracts to create new tokens. They do not support semi-homogeneous tokens (SFT), which are a combination of replaceable and non-replaceable tokens. In contrast, ERC-1155 tokens are designed to increase efficiency and cost-effectiveness by managing multiple types of tokens in a single smart contract.
