What is MetaMask?

MetaMask is a software wallet developed in 2016 by blockchain infrastructure company AgreSys. It can be used on Ethereum and other Ethereum virtual machine (EVM) chains to interact with decentralized applications (DApps). Over the years, MetaMask has become a widely recognized crypto wallet, with more than 10 million monthly active users as of September 2021. MetaMask was originally designed as a browser-based extension and later extended to mobile applications on iOS and Android devices. It also continues to develop its built-in features, which now include fiat entry and exit solutions, transaction processing, bridging and exchanges directly within the wallet interface.

Features of MetaMask Snaps

MetaMask Snaps are features created by independent developers that users can install directly into their MetaMask wallets. This enables new features that are not available on MetaMask by default. Snap covers three main categories: interoperability, trading insights, and notifications. Interoperability means Snaps is designed to enable MetaMask users to use their wallets on non-EVM blockchains. The focus of trading insights is to give users a clearer understanding of transactions before they approve them. Snap for Notifications allows users to receive cryptocurrency-related news and notifications directly through their wallet interface.

How to use MetaMask Snaps?

To start using MetaMask Snaps, make sure your MetaMask extension is updated to the latest version. Then, visit the MetaMask Snaps catalog and you will be able to view all available Snaps on one page. To install Snap into your wallet, click the Snap you are interested in, and then click the \"Add to MetaMask\" button. During this process, MetaMask notifies you of the permissions granted to a specific Snap. Importantly, Snap cannot access user account data on MetaMask. After the installation is complete, you can find the installed Snap by going to the settings in your wallet. Under Settings, click the Snaps tab to view the installed Snaps.

What\'s the next step for MetaMask Snaps?

Users can choose to download and test existing Snap on their MetaMask. For developers, MetaMask also released documentation to start creating their own Snap. Although Snaps releases are currently controlled by the team, MetaMask co-founder Dan Finlay envisions software that is open, easy to scale and interconnected. The team sees Snaps as a way for the product to adopt a more external collaborative stance. Snap aims to reach the stage of license-free release to increase the number of Snaps available.
