The Interplanetary File System (IPFS) is a point-to-point (P2P) distributed system used to store, access and share files, websites, applications and data. Launched in 2015 by computer engineer Juan Benet, IPFS represents a development in the field of file storage and retrieval and aims to provide a more resilient Internet experience.
Unlike traditional networks where data is stored on centralized servers, IPFS is committed to building a decentralized system. It uses a content addressing system in which each piece of content is identified by a unique hash value called an IPFS content identifier (CID). This means content is stored and retrieved based on its hash rather than location, making review or action more difficult.

Is IPFS a blockchain?
Although IPFS and blockchain are both decentralized technologies, they serve different purposes and cater to different use cases. It is commonly used in decentralized applications (DApps), involving cryptocurrencies, smart contracts, and decentralized finance (DeFi).
What is the use of IPFS?
IPFS has multiple uses, including delivering content globally, securely storing files, and promoting efficient file sharing. It can serve as a supplementary file system for public blockchains and other P2P systems. By integrating with Ethereum\'s smart contracts, IPFS can provide secure and cost-effective storage capabilities within the encryption ecosystem, designed to enhance Ethereum\'s overall performance.
IPFS is combined with Filecoin to create incentives for data storage. This combination can play a role in the development and storage of digital assets, enhancing the scalability of DApps on platforms such as Ethereum.
IPFS has multiple advantages over HTTP
Compared to Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) connections. This includes low operating costs, enhanced performance and security, data integrity and censorship resistance.
IPFS uses content identifiers to get the exact information the user is looking for, while HTTP connections send the user to a specific address or location. This means that IPFS handles \"what\"(content-centric), while HTTP handles \"places\"(location-centric).
