Smart Investing, Custom Stablecoins: 8 Things Coinbase Is Working On

At the annual “System Update” conference held by Coinbase on Wednesday, the company announced a series of new products and services, including prediction markets, intelligent investment advisors, and custom stablecoins. This indicates that Coinbase is expanding beyond its core role as a cryptocurrency exchange.

In addition to introducing stock trading and prediction markets on its platform, Coinbase also announced plans to expand into areas such as custom stablecoins, tokenization, and AI-driven investment advisors.

Stock trading on Coinbase

One of Coinbase’s most notable features, and what the company announced first, is the addition of stock trading to its platform.

Max Branzburg, head of Coinbase’s consumer and enterprise products, said that this product is “a major milestone in our plans to enable users to conduct all-day trading of stocks and ETFs using cryptocurrencies, anytime and anywhere.”

This product is now available in the United States. With this announcement, Coinbase aims to compete with companies like Robinhood and eToro, which have been offering stock and cryptocurrency trading services on the same platform for years. Coinbase also hopes to surpass competitors Kraken and Gemini, which already offer tokenized stock trading services outside of the United States.

Kalshi-powered prediction markets

Coinbase has also added prediction markets powered by Kalshi, allowing users to place bets on topics like sports and politics.

Predictive markets will begin to be launched today, and later in the United States. Coinbase will join this competitive market, which already includes or will soon include companies such as Polymarket, Gemini, DraftKings, Robinhood, and eToro.

Analysts at Citizens Financial Group estimate that by 2030, revenues of predictive market companies could increase five times, reaching $10 billion.

Coinbase has introduced an artificial intelligence-based financial management tool called Coinbase Advisor. This tool is similar to the products offered by Robinhood and eToro, providing investment advice related to cryptocurrencies, stocks, and predictive markets, based on user inputs or current news events.

Lincoln Moore, head of Coinbase’s artificial intelligence department, said that this intelligent advisor was developed by a team of portfolio managers with 75 years of experience. Coinbase Advisor is currently in testing phase and available only to a limited number of users.

Coinbase has also introduced a custom stablecoin. Alex Lovett, head of Coinbase’s infrastructure department, said that the company will offer a “customized stablecoin” supported by USDC. He believes that this technology allows the company to “integrate its brand into every transaction.”

Lovett mentioned that the exchange is working with wallet platforms Solflare, Flipcash, and the revenue protocol R2 to launch their customized stablecoins within the next few months.

Coinbase’s Tokenize service will bring assets onto the blockchain.

We plan to expand this list over time, eventually offering hundreds of contracts.”

Coinbase’s Base app is available worldwide

Coinbase’s Ethereum-based Layer-2 blockchain application, Base, has already been launched in more than 140 countries/regions. However, there is still no announcement regarding the native token plan that users have been waiting for.

In July, Coinbase renamed its wallet app as Base App. This move marked the beginning of their efforts to create a “universal app” that combines functionality from apps, social networking, and chat features together.
