Zcash NU7 network upgrade was successfully activated on the test network, and the countdown to the launch of the main network is one month.

Zcash has officially activated its NU7 network upgrade protocol on the test network. This move marks that the planned protocol changes have entered the field testing stage, with only about one month left before the target main network is launched.

According to data from ZecBlock, the Zcash testing network's block browser, block 4,465,026-the activation point of the NU7 program-was dug up at 18:21:45 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) on October 4. The Zcash official subsequently issued a statement on the X platform, confirming that NU7 has been fully launched on the test network.

Core upgrade content

As Zcash's next major network upgrade, NU7 aims to shorten the average block generation interval of the network from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, thereby improving transaction processing efficiency. In addition, the upgrade will also disable version 4 transaction types and introduce a "Network Sustainability Mechanism" to ensure the long-term health of the network by reallocating some transaction fees to future block rewards.

It is worth noting that disabling version 4 transactions means that ZEC assets stored in the Zcash legacy Sprout protection pool will become unexpendable. Users must transfer these funds to a new compatible pool before NU7 is fully activated to avoid assets being frozen.

Test and Decision Schedule

The Zcash Foundation said on Friday that testnet operators should use candidate versions to test NU7 under "real-world conditions." This testing phase allows the development team to fully assess the stability and performance of the upgrade before deciding whether to advance mainnet activation.

Based on their experience in running the test network, Zcash developers plan to make a final decision on mainnet activation on October 20 and determine the specific activation height. Currently, the target date for the main online launch is set at November 5.
