The U.S. SEC approves the first batch of 3x leverage Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs for investors

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has approved the first batch of 3x leverage Bitcoin and Ethereum exchange-traded funds (ETFs) for U.S. investors. These products provide exposure equivalent to three times the daily fluctuations of the underlying crypto assets, making them one of the most aggressive crypto investment products to have received clearance for the U.S. market to date.

Content of SEC approval: The first 3x BTC and ETH ETF in the United States

Prior to this, no ETF listed in the United States provided 3x leverage exposure to Bitcoin (BTC) or Ethereum (ETH) as a stand-alone product. With this SEC approval, this situation has changed. These products track the two largest cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation, providing investors with a way to gain amplified crypto exposure through regulated brokerage accounts without having to hold digital currencies directly.

The issuer of this product is REX Shares, which focuses on alternative and leveraged ETFs. Filing records for these products are available through the SEC EDGAR search system. More information about the background of the REX Shares product line can be obtained on its official website.

This approval builds on the SEC's previous approval of the Cboe BZX exchange to list 3x Bitcoin and Ethereum futures products, which lays the regulatory foundation for the U.S. leveraged crypto ETF structure.

How 3x ETF tracks Bitcoin and Ethereum

The 3x leveraged ETF aims to achieve three times the daily return of its benchmark index. If Bitcoin gains 5% in a single day, then the 3x Bitcoin ETF aims to achieve a 15% gain on the same day. The reverse is true: If Bitcoin falls by 5%, the ETF loses about 15%.

There are currently separate products for Bitcoin and Ethereum, meaning investors can choose to invest in exposure to one or both of these assets. Since existing reports do not detail specific rebalancing mechanisms, fee ratios and trading codes, investors should carefully review official fund documents before making any decisions.

Leveraged ETFs are designed for short-term trading, not long-term holding. Because its leverage ratio resets daily, returns over multiple days can be significantly different from simply multiplying the performance of the underlying asset over that period.

The significance of this approval for crypto ETF investors

As the first of its kind in the United States, these products are of milestone significance. Previously, investors wanting to gain enlarged crypto exposure through brokerage accounts had limited options. These ETFs bring tools previously common in the stock market into the crypto space and place them under the supervision of the SEC.

Since its approval, the spot Bitcoin ETF has attracted a large amount of investor interest, and some products have experienced the strongest sustained capital inflows since the bull market. 3x products enter a market that is already familiar with the structure of crypto ETFs, but they represent significantly higher risk levels.

The amplified upside potential is real, but the amplified downside risks also exist. If Bitcoin fell 33% in a single trading day, the value of the 3x Bitcoin ETF would return to almost zero. These tools are designed for experienced traders with a short-term time horizon, not investors who want to hold on to crypto assets for many years. The growing popularity of Bitcoin in regulated custody services shows that traditional finance is building more infrastructure around these assets, but leveraged ETFs remain a specialized tool in this broader trend.

Anyone considering investing in these products should read the prospectus carefully to understand how daily leverage resets work, and confirm the fee and structure of the product directly with the fund issuer before investing.
