Jack Dorsey\'s Bitcoin division enters the AI field
Jack Dorsey\'s Bitcoin-focused subsidiary Spiral is delving into the artificial intelligence field, incorporating the core engineering team of Block\'s Goose project, aiming to upgrade the framework to a platform dedicated to the development of autonomous agents (Agnics).
This move marks a conscious integration of the Bitcoin ecosystem with the rapidly growing field of autonomous software agents, with a focus on building a permission-free, open-source execution environment.
What is Goose?
Block\'s open source project office initially launched Goose, which aims to create an interoperable AI agent framework that allows users to connect large language models with real-world operations.
The framework can be driven by any language model with tool invocation capabilities, and its modular design allows it to connect to any system through simple extensions. Goose has been released under the Apache License 2.0 license, a loose open source license that allows users to freely use, modify and distribute software, even for commercial purposes.
Dhanji Prasanna, Block\'s chief technology officer, used the tool to lead the internal AI transformation, allowing engineers to save 8 to 10 hours of work per week through automation. Goose connects to existing enterprise tools through Anthropic\'s Model Context Protocol (MCP), allowing engineers and non-technical people to build custom workflows without having to write code from scratch.
Why choose Spiral? Why now?
Spiral is the open source Bitcoin development arm of Jack Dorsey\'s Block. Its product portfolio already includes the Lightning Development Kit and the Bitcoin Development Kit, open source libraries that abstract the underlying complex logic when building wallets and Lightning web applications.
Putting Goose\'s engineering team under Spiral allows the agency to shape the way autonomous AI agents interact with Bitcoin\'s native infrastructure. Block has long been a supporter of Bitcoin and its blockchain, and some observers believe that open source AI is a natural fit for decentralized finance. Dorsey once speculated that Bitcoin may become the currency of AI because autonomous intelligent experiences tend to be zero-friction transactions.
Block, OpenAI and Anthropic also recently jointly established the \"Autonomous Agent AI Foundation\", an organization that aims to cultivate open source projects that utilize autonomous systems that enable independent decision-making with little or no interference. Block contributed the Goose framework to the foundation, Anthropic provided its MCP protocol, and OpenAI provided the Agents.MD coding tool.
By leaving Goose development to Spiral, Dorsey appears to be closely linking the future of autonomous AI tools directly to the open, permission-free principles that underpin Bitcoin itself.
