Nvidia deepens its physical infrastructure layout to help build AI data centers in Australia
Nvidia is further delving into the physical infrastructure field behind the artificial intelligence boom and supporting its plan to add up to 2 GW of AI data center capacity in Australia by 2027. The company is working with local cloud services and infrastructure partners, including Firmus, IREN, NEXTDC, AirTrunk, CDC, Sharon AI, ResetData and Megaport.
The expansion will use Nvidia's DSX platform and is designed to support AI laboratories, start-ups, large enterprises, universities and developers in the region. This size is remarkable because Australia's existing data center capacity is approximately 1.6 GW, which means Nvidia's planned expansion may even exceed the country's current total load.
The announcement to transform from a chip supplier to an AI infrastructure company
is significant because it shows that NVIDIA is increasingly positioning itself as an AI infrastructure company, rather than just a GPU supplier.
These Australia facilities are expected to host multiple generations of Nvidia DSX systems, extending their business reach into accelerated computing, network technology and software. This fits into a broader industry shift: the investment story has expanded from mere GPUs to network equipment, memory, power, cooling systems, and physical data centers.
In addition, Nvidia is also delving into the financing process of the ecosystem. In the trillion-dollar AI data center boom, its role has gone beyond hardware sales to include guarantees, investments and infrastructure support.
Electricity becomes the real constraint
The bigger question is whether there is enough electricity to connect to the grid in time. AI clusters require far more computing power than the processors themselves. They also require grid connections, transformers, cooling systems and a large amount of reliable power supply.
The importance of this bottleneck is becoming increasingly prominent. Analysis points out that electricity may ultimately be more critical than GPU availability in determining the speed at which new AI production capacity comes online. The International Energy Agency (IEA) predicts that global data center power consumption will increase from approximately 485 terawatt hours (TWh) in 2025 to approximately 950 TWh in 2030, while AI-focused facilities are expected to grow even faster.
