Brumettal used the discovery to question the Trump administration's enforcement stance on the crypto industry. "Investigations and enforcement actions against the crypto industry have been withdrawn, settlements reached on meager terms, and even reversed," he said in the report.

In direct comments released with the report, Brumettal pointed out: "Tether and its flagship tokens have become the core of Iran's shadow banking system, allowing the Iranian government to fund regional agents and circumvent the sanctions regime." He warned that "the prospect of this financial weapon being used to harm U.S. interests is deeply troubling."

The release of this report comes amid a broader ongoing debate in Washington over how strictly stablecoin issuers should monitor and freeze sanctioned wallets. The discussion focused on whether existing compliance practices-including Tether's recent measures-are sufficient given the widespread use of USDT in illegal financial channels. Faced with similar reviews, Tether has cited its own more recent sanctions compliance record as a response. The contrast between the subcommittee's historic findings and Tether's current freezing activities is expected to be the focus of controversy between the company and its congressional critics as the stablecoin regulatory debate continues.
