iPhone 18 Pro: The chip, battery life and imaging are praised, but old users lack the power to upgrade
Apple's $1,199 iPhone 18 Pro has been widely praised for its powerful chip performance, excellent battery life and excellent camera performance. However, many reviewers pointed out that for users who already own the iPhone 17 Pro, this upgrade is not necessary.
Hardware highlights: significant internal innovation
Evaluation articles published since mid-September generally believe that the biggest change in this phone is its internal configuration, while its exterior design has remained almost unchanged.
Chip performance leaps forward
Editor Chance Miller testing found that compared with last year's A19 Pro chip, the new A20 Pro chip has improved processor performance by 22% to 27%, and graphics processing capabilities have increased by 40% to 45%. He particularly emphasized that thermal management is a major advantage of this phone. The A20 Pro is Apple's first iPhone chip manufactured using a 2-nanometer process.
Improved battery life
Official data shows that the phone supports up to 36 hours of video playback, 3 hours more than previous generations. Review editor Bobby Hellard recorded nearly 27 hours of battery life in a cyclic video test and said that under normal use, it can be charged at least once every two days.
Main camera introduces iris variable
This is the first time that the iPhone has a six-blade mechanical iris that can be switched between f/1.48 and f/4.0 to capture more light at night or maintain a clearer depth of field during the day. Reviewer Cherlynn Low said that she didn't clearly feel the difference between the two settings until she used it with manual shutter speed. These manual controls are only available on iPhone 18 Pro series models.
Upgrade suggestions: Old users can postpone starting
Although the new machine performs well, many reviewers still recommend that users who purchased the iPhone 17 Pro last year not upgrade. Cherlynn Low gave the phone a 9 out of 10 and compared it to Apple's previous "S" updates-which bring minor improvements within familiar design frameworks.
Technology journalist Britta O'Boyle believes that the small improvement from the iPhone 17 Pro to the 18 Pro is one of the shortcomings, and recommends that users with this model keep funds. Both she and Low pointed out that users using the iPhone 16 Pro or earlier will experience substantial performance improvements.
In addition, O'Boyle also mentioned that several new software features, including Siri AI, are also compatible with iPhone 15 Pro and earlier models.
Other Specifications and Market Information
The weight of the iPhone 18 Pro is 211 grams, which is 5 grams heavier than the iPhone 17 Pro. Apple released the iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max and its first folding-screen phone, the iPhone Duo, on September 9, but did not launch the standard version of the iPhone 18. Currently, the iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, which is $100 higher than the price of the iPhone 17 Pro when it was released.
