Summary

Google parent company Alphabet is close to reaching a nuclear energy contract worth more than $1 billion with Constellation Energy. According to Bloomberg, the deal could be announced within days. Shares of Constellation Energy (CEG) rose 4% in pre-market trading after the news broke. Technology giants such as Amazon and Microsoft have signed similar nuclear energy contracts to meet power needs driven by artificial intelligence. Alphabet has previously established nuclear energy partnerships with NextEra Energy and Southern Company.

Why technology companies favor nuclear energy

Artificial intelligence infrastructure consumes a lot of electricity, and the demand continues to rise. Nuclear facilities can generate stable electricity without direct carbon emissions, making them very attractive to technology companies that are expanding their computing business on a large scale.

Google parent company Alphabet is approaching a deal to buy nuclear energy from Constellation Energy as technology companies compete to provide power for the data center boom.

Solar and wind energy installations depend on environmental conditions, but nuclear reactors can operate day and night. This reliability is critical for large server farms that require uninterrupted power supplies.

Google is not the only technology leader seeking nuclear energy solutions. Several industry competitors have reached similar arrangements:

  • Amazon (AMZN): Agreed with Constellation to purchase 690 MW of capacity. Part of the electricity will come from a planned expansion of Constellation's Calvert Cliffs facility in Maryland.
  • Microsoft (MSFT): Executed a similar deal in 2024, committing to purchase electricity generated by its Three Mile Island facility in Pennsylvania. Constellation plans to restart the plant in the coming year.

Google's growing list of nuclear energy cooperation

The cooperation with Constellation is not Google's first nuclear energy commitment. Last year, Google partnered with NextEra Energy (NEE) to assist in the reactivation of the Duane Arnold nuclear facility in Iowa. In addition, Google signed a contract with Southern Company (SO) last month to fund upgrades of two of its nuclear facilities. If the deal with Constellation is finalized, it will be another major step in the company's expanding energy strategy.

If the transaction is completed, Alphabet will receive additional dedicated power to support its artificial intelligence infrastructure. As the company continues to expand its data center network, this goal becomes increasingly important.

Despite the impact of this particular transaction, financial analysts maintain a positive outlook for Alphabet shares. TipRanks data shows that GOOGL has a consensus rating of "Strong Buy", supported by 24 "Buy" ratings and 4 "Hold" ratings in the past three months. Analysts 'consensus price target of $427.88 suggests a potential gain of about 24% from current trading levels. This optimistic view reflects analysts 'confidence in Alphabet's overall business operations and goes beyond its energy procurement plans.

Constellation has successfully established power relationships with three major companies in the technology industry: Amazon, Microsoft and potentially Google. While each agreement is unique, the underlying trend remains the same: Big technology companies need more power, and nuclear power is increasingly becoming the preferred solution.

Currently, the cooperation between Google and Constellation has not been confirmed by either party. The Bloomberg report quoted people familiar with the matter and is the only source currently available. An official public statement could come in the next few days.
