ETH The German Financial Supervisory Authority rejects Futurum Bank's MiCA crypto asset service license application
On Tuesday, parent company Bitcoin Group SE announced that the German Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin) has rejected Futurum Bank AG's application for a crypto asset service provider license in accordance with the European Union's Crypto Asset Markets Regulation (MiCA). Previously, BaFin was tolerant of the encryption services provided by Futurum, which runs the Bitcoin.de trading platform, but this attitude no longer applies.
Futurum plans to work with regulated German partners to allow customers to resume trading in the next few weeks through the updated Bitcoin.de application. German financial regulator BaFin has rejected a license application for the operator of the Bitcoin.de trading platform under EU crypto rules, a move that has forced the platform to move to a new operating model.
Since Futurum Bank AG applied more than 15 months ago, this rejection means the end of BaFin's tolerance period for the bank's crypto services, and Bitcoin.de's restart will depend on partnerships with other regulated agencies.
Bitcoin Group stated in an announcement that Futurum applied for authorization as a cryptographic asset service provider under the European Union's Cryptographic Asset Market (MiCA) regulations on June 27, 2025. "BaFin's previous leniency on Futurum Bank AG's provision of crypto asset services no longer applies," the company said.

Other companies have sought or obtained MiCA authorization this year. Deutsche Bank sought MiCA licenses for institutional-level BTC and ETH custody in September, while Ripple obtained MiCA licenses covering 30 European Economic Area countries in July.
