Greece plans to impose a 10% tax rate on personal cryptocurrency capital gains, with annual exemptions below 500 euros

The Greek government recently released a new draft proposing to impose a 10% tax rate on personal cryptocurrency capital gains, while stipulating that income up to 500 euros per year can be exempt from tax. The draft has been submitted to the public consultation stage.

This proposal, announced by the Greek Ministry of Economy and Finance on October 7, 2026, is part of a package of policies covering private debt, financial markets and digital assets. The government said the introduction of provisions related to cryptoassets aims to fill gaps in existing tax laws and establish a clear framework for the tax treatment of digital assets.

Trading Rules and Exemption Details

Under the proposed rules, taxable income is usually calculated as the difference between the acquisition price and transfer price of the crypto asset. The draft also establishes rules for recording transactions and calculating the average acquisition price when purchasing the same asset multiple times.

It is worth noting that the 500 euro tax exemption applies to total capital gains for the entire tax year, rather than for each individual transaction. In addition, crypto-to-crypto swaps are not considered a trigger for capital gains tax in the proposal.

Pledge and loan income is included in the scope of taxation

The draft not only covers profits generated by the sale of cryptocurrencies, but also treats income from crypto lending, liquidity provision and staking as interest income and is taxed at a rate of 10%.
