Ethereum fell by 5%, spot ETFs suffered an outflow of US$161 million, and liquidation intensified

In the recent market sell-off, Ethereum (ETH) prices fell by about 5%. This trend was suppressed by multiple factors such as rising U.S. Treasury yields, a stronger U.S. dollar and weakening willingness to invest in risky assets. The overall market downturn reflects the increased volatility in the cryptocurrency sector, and the trend of Ethereum is down in sync with other assets in the sector.

Leverage heads face liquidation pressure

The sudden drop in Ethereum prices has dealt a heavy blow to leveraged traders. According to reports, as Ethereum prices fell to the $2,500 to $2,550 range, approximately $165 million in Ethereum long positions were forcibly closed. These forced liquidations occur when falling prices trigger stop-loss mechanisms for leveraged traders.

Data from CoinGlass, a leading cryptocurrency data provider, shows that the total amount of open interest on Ethereum derivatives remains high, with open interest exceeding US$33 billion. High open interest often means continued speculative activity, and when positions are closed, they may increase the risk of sharp market fluctuations.

Crowded long positions have amplified recent market volatility. When Ethereum falls below key support levels, leveraged holders are often forced to liquidate their positions, causing a sudden surge in selling activity. Once prices fall below key support, the clearing mechanism will automatically close leveraged positions, triggering a chain of market sell orders, thereby accelerating the price decline.

Currently, Ethereum is trading in the $2,500 to $2,550 range, which has previously been regarded by some analysts as a potential entry point for buyers. However, continued liquidation activity has raised questions about the stability of this short-term support.

ETF outflows intensify

At the same time, U.S. spot Ethereum exchange-traded funds (ETFs) recorded a net outflow of US$160.9 million on the most recent trading day. The total amount of money withdrawn from these ETFs in the past five days was approximately $506 million, the largest five-day outflow since January this year.

The trend continues the weakness earlier this week, when ETFs experienced their largest outflows in weeks. Continued net redemption signals indicate that investor enthusiasm for Ethereum exposure in traditional financial products is declining, putting additional pressure on the spot market.

This recent wave of capital outflows is in sharp contrast to the market environment in mid-September. At the time, the decline in exchange reserves and the renewed inflow of ETF funds were seen as factors supporting the tightening supply of Ethereum.

These developments highlight the cautious outlook for Ethereum in the near term as both derivatives and ETF markets react to changing macro conditions and declining investor sentiment.
