Members of the European Parliament call for strengthened regulation of cryptocurrencies to combat corruption risks in digital finance
Members of the European Parliament call on the European Commission to strengthen regulation of cryptoassets and introduce more stringent measures to address corruption risks related to digital finance and opaque ownership structures. This requirement is part of the EU's overall efforts to strengthen the fight against financial crime.
Focus on digital assets and asset recovery
On Thursday, members of the European Parliament passed a non-binding resolution emphasizing that the European Commission must address corruption loopholes created by emerging digital tools, including cryptocurrencies. The resolution prioritizes efforts to improve the tracing, freezing, confiscation and recovery of proceeds of crime, especially those involving cryptocurrency transactions.
Lawmakers pointed to growing concerns that digital assets could be used to launder illicit funds or conceal the identities of actual beneficiaries. They urged the upcoming anti-corruption strategy to introduce effective mechanisms to monitor and control the use of such assets.
Members of Parliament emphasized the urgency of strengthening efforts to combat the tracing, freezing, confiscation and recovery of assets derived from criminal activities involving cryptocurrencies and other digital instruments.

As the legislative body of the EU, the European Parliament is responsible for amending, approving or vetoing EU legislation and supervising other EU institutions.
Broader reforms and timetables
In addition to addressing the risks posed by crypto assets, lawmakers also urged the European Commission to develop stricter rules for public procurement and government allocation. They called for more consistent standards for managing conflicts of interest across EU member states, as well as uniform regulations on lobbying and political financing.
Lawmakers also stressed the importance of protecting whistleblowers and investigative journalists, who play a key role in exposing corruption. The calls are intended to supplement the EU's existing anti-corruption directive, which came into effect in May this year. The Directive establishes a common definition of corruption-related offences and sets minimum penalties across the EU to harmonize the legal frameworks of member states.
The European Commission is expected to complete its comprehensive anti-corruption strategy by the end of 2026, aiming to update and unify oversight mechanisms across bloc.
