Jensen Huang stated that artificial intelligence is being utilized to improve the design of NVIDIA’s chips.
Despite rising costs, NVIDIA’s gross margin remains at 75%.
In the context of increasing competition in the semiconductor industry, R&D expenditures have increased by 64%.
Jensen Huang said that without AI, NVIDIA would not be able to develop effective chips.
NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang noted that artificial intelligence has become an essential part of the company’s chip development process. Automated systems can explore new design solutions during night hours, thereby improving performance and energy efficiency.
These statements were made in an interview in 2024, and they have once again attracted attention. This raises an important question for investors: Can artificial intelligence-assisted engineering help NVIDIA maintain its exceptional profitability, especially as AMD, custom chip developers, and major cloud service providers continue to introduce competitive technologies?
During a conversation with Patrick Collison, Jensen Huang explained that NVIDIA is becoming increasingly dependent on artificial intelligence in the engineering process. These systems help optimize chip architecture, power consumption, and performance, allowing engineers to focus on evaluating results and developing new technologies. He also described how artificial intelligence is used to identify software vulnerabilities, analyze their causes, and assign problems to engineers who are responsible for solving them.
This approach goes beyond the automation of simple repetitive tasks. By continuously reviewing alternative design solutions, artificial intelligence can help Nvidia identify more efficient configurations, without the need to proportionally increase the number of engineering resources invested. However, the company has not yet revealed exactly how much the automation powered by artificial intelligence has reduced chip development costs or accelerated the release process of individual products.
With a gross margin of 75%, Nvidia faces new competitive challenges
. According to Nvidia’s latest financial reports, its revenue in the second quarter of fiscal year 2027 reached $96.2 billion, a year-on-year increase of 106%. Revenue from data center services amounted to $89 billion, a year-over-year increase of 117%. The gross margin under GAAP improved from 72.4% to 75%.
Nvidia attributed the increase in gross margin mainly to stronger product portfolios like Blackwell Ultra, rather than direct benefits from artificial intelligence-assisted engineering.
Meanwhile, quarterly research and development expenses rose from $4.29 billion to $7.05 billion, an increase of approximately 64%. This means that even though artificial intelligence is already integrated into the development process, Nvidia still invests substantial funds in innovation. The company expects its gross margin to be around 74% in the third quarter, indicating some pressure compared to the most recent reporting period.
As competitors expand their efforts in developing AI accelerators, this outlook faces challenges. Similar concerns were raised during the Vera Rubin announcement.
Can chips designed with AI help Nvidia withstand competition from AMD and custom chips?
