U.S. spot bitcoin ETF suffered a weekly net outflow of nearly US$679 million
From October 5 to October 9, 2026, U.S. spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) experienced a difficult week. As institutional investors withdrew hundreds of millions of dollars from these products, relevant data showed that these funds recorded a net outflow of approximately US$678.9 million during the five trading days, with selling pressure mainly concentrated on Wednesday and Thursday.
Market sentiment was sluggish at the beginning of the week. On Monday, October 5, the spot Bitcoin ETF recorded a net outflow of US$89.9 million. However, market sentiment briefly warmed up on Tuesday, with funds attracting fresh capital inflows of $118.8 million. However, this recovery momentum failed to last.
On Wednesday, October 7, the market reversed sharply, with net withdrawals reaching US$484.9 million, making it the worst-performing trading day of the week. Selling pressure extended into Thursday, when another $244.1 million left relevant funds that day. The market brought some breathing space on Friday, as the Bitcoin ETF returned to positive territory, recording a net inflow of $21.1 million. Still, the latest recovery was not enough to offset losses in the previous week.
BlackRock's IBIT fund experienced particularly sharp fluctuations in capital flows: a $207.7 million outflow on Wednesday, followed by a partial replenishment on Friday with an inflow of $22.4 million. Fidelity's FBTC was also under selling pressure, recording $197.1 million in redemptions on Thursday alone.
What does capital outflows mean for Bitcoin prices?
The sharp reversal in ETF demand has raised questions about the sustainability of Bitcoin's October rally, especially as investors reassess their exposure to risky assets. Spot Bitcoin ETFs have become an important indicator of institutional demand for BTC. However, the flow of ETF funds is only one of many factors that affect the price of Bitcoin. Overall market sentiment, macroeconomic dynamics and derivative positions will also have an impact on market volatility.
ETF flows returned to positive territory on Friday, providing an initial signal of stability, although a single day of positive performance was not enough to establish a lasting recovery trend. Investors are currently watching closely to see whether institutional demand can rebound this week.
Bitcoin's price trend reflects weak institutional demand. BTC started the week at around $86,480 and fell to about $82,546 by the close on Friday. As of press time, BTC has fallen by more than 3% in the past week.
