Historical footage of SWIFT\'s blockchain research returns to public view
Cryptocurrency analyst Steph Is Crypto shared a post highlighting SWIFT\'s early assessment of Stellar, which brought historical data from a SWIFT blockchain research back to public attention.
Steph Is Crypto posted on the X platform that SWIFT \"has officially confirmed early testing of Stellar\" and added that XLM was part of the original blockchain settlement experiment. Although this claim is based on comments made at official SWIFT webinars, the broader context suggests that the discussions involved historical research rather than newly announced collaborations or network integrations.
Webinar Review of Early Blockchain Assessments
This claim stems from a video clip shared by cryptocurrency researcher SMQKE that highlighted remarks made by SWIFT representatives at the official webinar. In his speech, the spokesperson reviewed SWIFT\'s early exploration of blockchain technology, explaining that around 2015, the organization worked with about 45 to 50 commercial banks to study distributed ledger technology through sandbox experiments.
Based on webinar content, these early assessments included several public blockchain networks, specifically Bitcoin, Ethereum, Stellar and XRP. The goal is to understand how this emerging technology works and whether it can contribute to the financial infrastructure of the future. Discussions present these efforts as exploratory studies in the early stages of industry development rather than implementation of production systems.
Steph Is Crypto\'s post focused on the fact that Stellar was included in these original experiments and emphasized that the network was one of the public blockchains evaluated by SWIFT during its initial research phase.
Historical testing does not represent current integration
Although the webinar confirmed Stellar\'s participation in SWIFT\'s early blockchain research, it did not announce that SWIFT has adopted or integrated the public Stellar network into its global financial messaging infrastructure. The tests mentioned at the seminar took place about a decade ago and were part of basic exploratory sandbox research conducted with Bitcoin, Ethereum and XRP. The speech only reviewed that period of history and did not disclose new collaborations or confirm that SWIFT currently routes transactions through Stellar.
SWIFT\'s current strategy has shifted in different directions. Instead of adopting public blockchain, the organization has developed its own private infrastructure for digital asset interoperability. It recently launched a blockchain-based shared ledger minimum viable product that aims to help financial institutions process tokenized deposits and central bank digital currencies, while continuing to use the traditional ISO 20022 messaging standard.
Why historical research is still relevant
Although not currently integrated, the webinar confirmed that SWIFT examined Stellar in its earliest blockchain research. Proponents of the Stellar ecosystem believe this proves that the network\'s technology has attracted institutional interest during the formative phase of distributed ledger research. As a result, Steph Is Crypto\'s post brought back attention to this historical milestone. However, available evidence suggests that the webinar confirmed early exploratory testing conducted around 2015, rather than an active partnership or a modern deployment of the public Stellar blockchain in SWIFT\'s global financial network.
