Hoskinson: Leios puts Cardano\'s performance on par with XRP Ledger
Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson has made a bold statement about the network\'s next major protocol upgrade. In an interview with the \"The Breakdown\" podcast hosted by David Gokhshtein, Hoskinsen said that the Ouroboros Leios upgrade will increase Cardano\'s internal throughput to 60 times its current capacity. He believes this improvement will put Cardano on par with XRP Ledger in raw performance.
\"Leios will bring a 60-fold increase in throughput within the system, so we are fine, we are as efficient as XRP, and we still stick to our principles.\" Hoskinson said.
This comparison is quite weighty. XRP Ledger can process up to 1500 transactions per second, with a settlement time of just 3 to 5 seconds, making it the network of choice for payments and cross-border transfers. Cardano\'s current throughput is well below this level, a gap that has been continuously criticized by developers and investors.
The Ouroboros Leios protocol introduces a parallel transaction processing mechanism with the goal of achieving a speed of more than 1000 transactions per second while maintaining decentralization and security. Hoskinson emphasized that these performance improvements have not been accompanied by the trade-off of the common blockchain trilemma-that is, scalability improvements often come at the expense of security or decentralization.
Test online launch, the main network target is set at the end of the year
The public test network called Musashi Dojo was launched on June 23, 2026, marking the first time the protocol has been running in a real network environment. The main network deployment is planned to be completed by the end of 2026. Hoskinson also said that higher performance is expected to attract more users, increase trading activity and improve DeFi TVL (total locked value) on the network.
The comments came after Hoskinson warned that the Cardano ecosystem could be severely damaged if key governance votes failed to approve important upgrades. He pointed out that Cardano\'s DeFi TVL could collapse if governing members did not vote for the upgrade. This statement came after the closure of well-known projects in the Cardano ecosystem, TapTools and JPG Store.
This upgrade carries execution risks. Deployment on an active decentralized main network will bring technical problems that the test network environment cannot be fully replicated. Any delay may affect the confidence of developers and the market in 2027.
