South Korea\'s financial super app Toss has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Optimism and Sunnyside Labs, and will test the feasibility of Kron-based stablecoins on blockchain infrastructure through a three-month technical verification program.
Project Overview
Toss has partnered with Optimism and Sunnyside Labs to test the Korean Won-based stablecoin blockchain infrastructure over the next three months. The three parties will use Optimism\'s OP Stack technology and Sunnyside Labs\'s Privacy Boost privacy protection solution to focus on evaluating key aspects such as payment settlement, compliance requirements and privacy protection. The project aims to verify whether public blockchain infrastructure can support secure and scalable digital payment services while meeting institutional financial standards.
According to relevant press releases, the financial technology company will work with Ethereum Layer 2 Network Optimism and privacy technology developer Sunnyside Labs to jointly test whether blockchain infrastructure can support institutional-level payment systems while complying with South Korean financial regulations. The three parties will conduct proof-of-concept (PoC) work in the next three months.
Three major verification areas
As part of the project, the three parties will focus on assessing whether financial institutions can directly manage payment and settlement processes; whether they meet customer identification and anti-money laundering requirements; and whether they can protect sensitive transaction information when using public blockchains. These requirements form the core foundation of technical assessment. Optimism provides blockchain infrastructure support through its OP Stack technology, while Sunnyside Labs, one of the core developers of the network, will integrate its Privacy Boost solution to address data confidentiality issues.
Privacy Boost technology is designed to address the main limitation of public blockchains-transaction details and wallet balances are often publicly visible to network participants. According to partners, the technology not only ensures the privacy of sensitive financial data, but also allows regulated agencies to verify transactions and maintain existing compliance standards.
In addition, relevant companies said that the system has been optimized to support high concurrent transaction volume and can meet the business needs of simultaneously processing a large number of user payment services.
Toss\'s blockchain exploration
Toss, which has approximately 30 million users and supports more than 500,000 online and offline merchants, plans to gradually expand blockchain-based experiments in its payment and platform services. A Toss executive said the project aims to verify an infrastructure that integrates Ethereum security and a private network built specifically for local currency financial services, while ensuring interoperability with other blockchain ecosystems.
Select OP Stack for infrastructure testing
The core of this verification is Optimism\'s modular blockchain framework, OP Stack. This framework supports a dedicated application chain system and relies on Ethereum to provide security and settlement guarantees. The second-layer network first separates transactions from the Ethereum main chain, and finally completes settlement on the main chain, thereby reducing costs and increasing transaction speed.
According to Toss, the partners will evaluate whether OP Stack can support a blockchain financial network customized for South Korea\'s digital payment services, rather than relying on shared public infrastructure. Currently, more than 30 blockchain networks use Optimism technology, including projects developed by Sony, World Chain, Uniswap, OKX Layer and Kraken. The company also offers institutional-level deployment solutions specifically designed to meet regulatory and security requirements, and regulated financial companies such as Bitpanda in Europe have taken the lead in adopting the technology.
This collaboration coincides with Optimism\'s recent completion of a four-week experiment on its OP main network, which tested a transaction sequencing mechanism based on equity pledges based on the existing gas fee system. The pilot project aims to explore whether pledge incentives can optimize transaction priorities without affecting the experience of ordinary users. This is also part of the network\'s ongoing blockchain infrastructure research work.
