Clearstream cryptocurrency custody adds XRP and XLM

Clearstream expands its institutional crypto custody platform to add six new digital assets

Clearstream, the post-transaction services arm of Deutsche Börse Group, has expanded its institutional crypto custody platform to cover six new cryptocurrencies: XRP, Stellar (XLM), Cardano (ADA), Solana (SOL), Litecoin (LTC) and Avalanche (AVAX).

The newly added assets coexist with previously supported Bitcoin and Ethereum, which have been managed through Clearstream\'s fully regulated crypto escrow service since last year. The service uses Crypto Finance as a sub-custodian-a company also affiliated with Deutsche Börse Group and regulated by MiCAR--to ensure that the expanded service still complies with the requirements of the European Union\'s Cryptographic Asset Markets Regulation Act (MiCA).

Meet institutional needs for MiCA-compliant assets

Clearstream said the expansion is designed to respond to \"the growing importance of MiCA-compliant crypto assets in institutional finance\" and is committed to bridging the gap between traditional financial infrastructure and the world of crypto assets. Clearstream screens based on institutional customer needs and whether assets can meet MiCA compliance requirements. Each asset is subject to compliance review to ensure it meets EU standards on transparency, anti-money laundering and operational security.

The inclusion of XRP is particularly eye-catching because the token has previously been involved in a long-running legal dispute with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Although the U.S. regulatory environment remains fragmented, the EU\'s MiCA framework provides a path for assets such as XRP to gain institutional recognition in Europe, regardless of their status in other jurisdictions.

Broader transformation in the traditional financial sector

In early 2025, Deutsche Börse Group announced that Clearstream will begin providing crypto custody and settlement services to its institutional clients, which will be officially launched in April 2025. This latest expansion further expands the range of assets customers can obtain through Clearstream\'s existing account infrastructure.

Clearstream\'s ICSD customers can use their existing accounts to access crypto custody services, lowering the operating threshold for institutions when adding digital assets to their portfolios. Clearstream is one of the world\'s largest clearing and custodian institutions, covering more than 60 different markets.

This move reflects a broader trend: traditional financial institutions are delving deeper into the digital asset space under regulated frameworks, especially as MiCA develops clearer rules for the EU.
