Cardano founder accuses Ethereum of copying its EUTXO model

Key Points

Hoskinson said Ethereum is trying to replicate Cardano\'s EUTXO model without mentioning it. The proposal proposes one-time payment objects to reduce Ethereum\'s status growth. Any agreement changes require review and hard fork.

Ethereum\'s UTXO initiative

Ethereum Foundation researcher Toni Wahrstätter this week released a design that treats simple payments as temporary one-time objects rather than permanent account status entries. In current Ethereum, the first payment to any address creates a permanent status record, even if the transfer does not require continuous account data. The proposal would prove the existence of the payment through historical records and leave only a spent mark in the status. Bitcoin (BTC) introduced this one-time structure through its UTXO model, where each output is created once, spent once, and then leaves the active memory set.

Wahrstätter stated that this approach reduces the permanent state of payment workloads by approximately 99.8%, because new account entries take up approximately 100 to 150 bytes, while native UTXO only leaves approximately 0.3 bytes. The proposal is based on Frame Transactions and EIP-8141, and Wahrstätter thanked Vitalik Buterin for raising the topic.

Allegations of plagiarism

Hoskinson responded by accusing Ethereum developers of copying the design of extensions that support Cardano smart contracts without publicly acknowledging them. \"EUTXO is the biggest innovation in smart contracts, but Ethereum cannot mention it because they are actually trying to copy it,\" Hoskinson wrote on X. He added that mentioning Cardano in the Ethereum community was \"a crime\" and pointed out that Cardano was once ranked third by market value.

There was no strong market reaction. ADA traded close to US$0.17 after rising 12.5% in the previous week; Ethereum traded at approximately US$1754 and had a market value of US$211 billion, maintaining its second ranking. The design of Ethereum has not yet become an official EIP. Changes on this scale still require community review and hard forks, so unless developers incorporate the idea into the upgrade process, the debate is likely to remain theoretical.

Hoskinson\'s complaints reflect the long-standing competitive relationship between the two ecosystems and Cardano\'s efforts to make EUTXO its core identity. Cardano\'s recent expansion plan to Leios continues to focus on the design, despite criticism from some members of the community of Hoskinson\'s leadership.
