Paul Greval, who has served as Coinbase\'s chief legal officer since 2020, announced that he will transition to an advisory role for the exchange effective July 31.

In a Twitter and LinkedIn post on Platform X on Thursday, Greval said that after his departure, Coinbase\'s two legal vice presidents, Molly Abraham and Ryan Van Gerraher, will take over the positions of general counsel and vice chairman respectively. Abraham said she would \"steer\" the exchange\'s legal team.

Whoever succeeds Greval as the exchange\'s next chief legal officer may have a significant impact on U.S. cryptocurrency policy and regulation. As chief legal officer, Greival led the exchange\'s legal team in response to the Securities and Exchange Commission\'s 2023 enforcement action, which accused Coinbase of operating as an unregistered stock exchange, broker and clearing house.

Since the 2023 lawsuit (later dismissed during the Trump administration), Coinbase and its executives have developed a close relationship with the White House and lawmakers who support crypto policy. The company is one of the major contributors to Fairshake Political Action Committee, which funds media that supports politicians it considers \"pro-crypto\"; in addition to advocating crypto-related legislation in Congress, CEO Brian Armstrong has also met with U.S. President Donald Trump.

Greval added that he would announce potential new positions \"in due course.\" Cointelegraph contacted Coinbase about details of Greval\'s departure, but there was no immediate response.

Coinbase will continue to promote the structural construction of the U.S. crypto market

Several Coinbase executives, including Armstrong, have been urging congressional lawmakers to pass the Digital Asset Market Clarification Act, which is expected to significantly transfer regulatory authority over digital assets from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

The U.S. Senate is currently in a state session and may vote on the bill until Monday after lawmakers return.
