The Zcash Ironwood upgrade has been confirmed to be activated at around 8:00 a.m. EST on July 28, a week later than the original time. Zcash core developer Sean Bowe confirmed that activation will occur at a block height of 3,428,143. This Ironwood upgrade introduces a new privacy pool and disables the existing Orchard privacy pool after developers previously disclosed an \"unlimited\" vulnerability.

Zcash Ironwood upgrade will replace Orchard\'s privacy pool
The Zcash Ironwood upgrade came after an \"unlimited\" vulnerability was discovered in Orchard, the network\'s main privacy transaction pool. Developers said the vulnerability could theoretically allow the creation of fake ZECs, but there is currently no evidence that the vulnerability was ever exploited.
Emergency software updates have temporarily disabled Orchard transactions before the issue becomes public. A subsequent NU6.2 hard fork fixed the vulnerability and restored normal network operation. The Ironwood upgrade is the next phase of this security update.
Previously, Shielded Labs had recommended postponing deployment because exchanges, wallet providers and mining pools were simultaneously migrating from existing Zcashd software to newer Z3 technology stacks (including Zebra, Zaino and Zallet).
Zcash Ironwood upgrades add accounting verification capabilities
A key feature of the Zcash Ironwood upgrade is the process of migrating from Orchard to the newly created privacy pool. After funds leave Orchard, they must pass an accounting checkpoint before entering the new privacy pool.
According to Shielded Labs, this mechanism could reveal whether a fake ZEC has been created previously using the vulnerability. If fraudulent tokens exist, migrating them through checkpoints will expose their existence; if migration is not carried out, the tokens will no longer be transferred after Orchard is closed.
