Ledger researchers discover security flaws in Swiss hardware wallet cards!

A new development has reignited the security debate in the cryptocurrency hardware wallet market. Ledger researchers have discovered a key vulnerability in the products of Swiss hardware wallet card maker Tangem that could be exploited through physical intervention. The vulnerability allegedly allows the use of a specialized laser attack to reset the password protection of the device.

According to information shared by researchers, such attacks require physical contact with the device. In addition, the attack cannot be easily completed by ordinary users, and implementation requires approximately $250,000 worth of laboratory equipment and superb technical expertise. As a result, the vulnerability is seen more as part of a complex physical attack scenario against high-value targets.

According to details in the news report, attackers could use laser intervention to affect the security mechanism of the Tangem card, triggering the password reset process. Since the main function of hardware wallets is to store private keys offline in a secure environment, this vulnerability, which allows password resets, is seen as a significant risk within the industry. Although the attack cannot be implemented remotely, reducing the risk faced by ordinary users, it is worth noting that once physical contact is gained, the security of the device may theoretically be compromised.

The most critical point is that for Tangem cards currently in circulation, this vulnerability cannot be fixed through software updates. Researchers said that due to the hardware design of existing cards, subsequent patching of this vulnerability is impossible. This may require new manufacturing processes or hardware revisions to address safety issues.

Experts emphasize that hardware wallet users should accurately assess the scope of threats in such reports. Although attacks that require physical contact, high cost, and a laboratory environment may seem unlikely in daily use, the incident once again highlights the critical importance of independent security audits and transparent technical disclosures in the hardware wallet space.
