Satoshi Nakamoto's 16-year-old response to quantum threats has reappeared
Satoshi Nakamoto, the anonymous founder of Bitcoin, published a message 16 years ago describing a response: If a quantum computer threatens the encryption system used by Bitcoin, the system should respond. Today, this information has once again attracted attention.
In a post posted on the BitcoinTalk forum on July 10, 2010, Satoshi Nakamoto pointed out that if Bitcoin's digital signature system gradually weakens rather than suddenly collapses, the network could switch to a more powerful encryption algorithm.
Satoshi Nakamoto said in the announcement:
"If this happens suddenly, it will be no problem. But if it happens gradually, we can switch to a more robust system. When you first run the updated software, all of your funds will be re-signed with a new, more powerful signing algorithm."
According to Satoshi Nakamoto, this process can be accomplished by users sending their bitcoins to a new address that uses a stronger signature system. In other words, users can switch to a cryptographic structure that is more resistant to quantum attacks by moving assets to a new address they own.
This discussion stems from the possibility that quantum computers could crack Bitcoin's elliptic curve encryption technology. Satoshi Nakamoto believes that if threats can be identified in advance and gradually emerge, the Bitcoin protocol can be updated.
