AI is a hot topic in the technology world: is it inevitable superintelligence, or is it just a simple tool? Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin launched a heated debate. What if the real danger lies not in AI itself, but in our inability to control it? Let's enter the situational showdown in 2040.
In short
Vitalik Buterin asks: Is AI an existential threat or is it just a simple tool? His uncertainty reflects a lack of consensus in the debate.
Scenario in 2040: Between Terminator and Decentralized Utopia, Ethereum proposes to use blockchain solutions to control AI.
Transparency, open source or emergency switch? There is no perfect AI response, but there are still directions for exploration.
Vitalik Butrin: The vague definition of "super intelligence" is at the core of the AI controversy
This is not a technical issue, but a philosophical one that pits supporters and opponents of the "AI 2040" scenario (i.e., the emergence of superintelligence in 2040). Some people, such as Daniel Kokotailo (former OpenAI member), believe that artificial superintelligence is an existential threat that must be prevented. Others, such as Jan Lequin (Meta), view it as a fantasy because the current model is nothing more than an auto-completion machine. Vitalik Butrin plays the role of sober referee: If I believed that current AI was normal technology, I would side with the opponents. If I believe that artificial superintelligence will arrive before 2030, I will be close to the AI 2040 camp. But I don't know... that's the problem.
His Plan A? Be completely transparent and set an emergency switch to end dangerous AI training. But he also admitted that humans may fall between "innocence" and "innocence squared"... On one hand, there are people who believe that everything will be okay, and on the other hand, there are people who believe that everything can be controlled.
2040: The end of the world? Can Ethereum save the world?
What if 2040 was like "Terminator"? Alarmists even see uncontrollable AI: killing jobs, manipulating markets, or worse... But in this nightmare, Ethereum and its blockchain may play the role of savior. How to achieve it? Make AI open to everyone through transparent smart contracts and decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs). Vitalik Buterin envisions a system:
The AI model will be open source (to avoid being monopolized by a few giants such as Google and Meta);
Key decisions will be decided by community voting through a decentralized governance mechanism;
The "termination switch"(emergency switch) will be automated and tamper-resistant with the help of blockchain.
The only problem is that Ethereum itself cannot guarantee global collaboration. If China or the United States refuses to participate, artificial super intelligence may still emerge in the dark. Decentralization will face limitations.
AI reflects our fears: control or chaos?
Vitalik Buterin reminds us that the real debate is not whether artificial superintelligence will come, but how we will manage its risks. So, are you ready to trust Ethereum to save mankind?
