XRP is expected to challenge Bitcoin, but with one prerequisite

Schwartz: It is not impossible for XRP to overtake Bitcoin, but the road is narrow

David Schwartz, former chief technology officer of Ripple (Twitter ID: @JoelKatz), said that XRP may one day surpass Bitcoin in market value, but he carefully set the preconditions for this scenario. During an X Spaces discussion, Schwartz pointed out that this situation occurred not because Bitcoin's value shrank, but because XRP's price rose faster.

During a conversation with X Spaces, Schwartz was directly asked if XRP had a chance to overtake Bitcoin. He said this was possible, but not because of the decline in Bitcoin's value. "Yes, I think it is possible," Schwartz added,"but I don't think it will happen through Bitcoin shrinking, but through XRP growing faster than Bitcoin."

He also predicts significant growth in the broader digital asset sector, and in such a scenario, the value of top cryptocurrencies may rise together rather than competing for market share.

XRP Ledger's speed and functionality are the core arguments

Schwartz believes that with its technical advantages, XRP Ledger can capture a greater share of growth, citing its speed and versatility relative to Bitcoin. "Because XRP Ledger has higher functionality and/or faster speeds, it will see more growth," he said, adding that users may be more inclined to feature features that "Bitcoin cannot support."

This technical argument has a certain foundation. Transactions on XRP Ledger can be settled in 3 to 5 seconds, and the network can support up to 1,500 transactions per second, while Bitcoin throughput is approximately 7 transactions per second. Bitcoin guarantees decentralization and censorship resistance through proof-of-work mining priority, viewing slower base layer throughput as a trade-off; while XRP Ledger optimizes speed and low cost through a federal consensus model.

Still, the scale of the challenge should not be underestimated. Schwartz's remarks described a possibility rather than an imminent prediction. To overtake Bitcoin at current valuations, XRP needs to fill a market value gap of approximately US$1.49 trillion.

However, there are signs that institutional interest in XRP is growing. Previously, the XRP ETF attracted US$110.49 million in capital inflows in its strongest week of 2026, with cumulative inflows reaching approximately US$1.66 billion. Goldman Sachs became the largest disclosed XRP ETF holder, with positions of approximately US$87.4 million.

With the end of Ripple's long-running litigation with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), XRP has also joined the debate with a clearer U.S. regulatory stance.

Schwartz did not give a specific timetable for his prediction, and his remarks were more like a long-term observation than a short-term prediction. However, he did add: "To be honest, I think the possibility of a significant increase in XRP is greater than the possibility of no increase."
