NEAR Summary of NEAR Intentions Security Incident
A security incident occurred in the cross-chain transaction protocol NEAR Intentions, resulting in a loss of approximately US$3.8 million. The team suspended platform services after detecting the vulnerability on October 1 and resumed operations after fixing the flaw. The company said the accident originated from a code flaw in its Omni deposit and withdrawal system interacting with the NEAR Intention smart contract, which was used by attackers to withdraw funds before the team responded.
Contract vulnerability fixed
NEAR intentions said on X (formerly Twitter) that preliminary estimates of losses were approximately US$3.8 million. The team added that all affected funds will be fully compensated. According to the company, loopholes on the contract side have been fixed. NEAR Intentions and its website near.com are expected to resume normal operations within about an hour of the announcement.
However, eleven networks have limited service for extended periods of time. While the team completed repairs to Omni's infrastructure, deposit and withdrawal functions on BNB Intelligent Chain, Polygon, TON, Optimism, Avalanche, Stellar, Monad, X Layer, ADI, Scroll and Plasma remained unavailable for approximately 12 hours. Once the main platform is back online, users holding these network assets (including through the HOT Wallet app or near.com) can exchange them for other assets.
The scope of influence is limited to USDT on BSC
NEAR co-founder Illia Polosukhin later confirmed that NEAR Intention and near.com have been back online, although services on some affected networks remain restricted. He said that the impact of this exploit was limited to the USDT on the BNB Intelligent Chain (BSC). Polosukhin emphasized that the NEAR core protocol, NEAR tokens and other applications on the network were not affected by the incident, and reiterated that users affected by the vulnerability will receive full compensation.
NEAR Intention allows users to complete cross-chain transactions without choosing a bridge or exchange. Independent market makers (called "Solvers") compete to fill in the redemption for each request. According to data on its website, the platform has processed more than US$30 billion in transaction volume on 35 blockchains.
Affected by this news, the NEAR price of the native token of the NEAR Protocol blockchain fell by approximately 6% in 24 hours. It is worth noting that this vulnerability affects NEAR Intentions 'cross-chain infrastructure, not the underlying blockchain itself.

Blockchain investigator ZachXBT pointed out that the breach began with abnormal withdrawals in the BNB Chain hot wallet associated with NEAR Intentions. He said the stolen funds were sent to the KuCoin exchange and then bridged to Bitcoin (BTC).
