First breakthrough in the Ethereum hierarchical architecture
The Ethereum Economic Zone (EEZ) successfully performed what is said to be the first atomic cross-chain transaction between the Ethereum base layer and the Layer 2 network on the main network. EEZ contributor Eduardo Antuña confirmed this milestone and pointed out that it proves that "atomic synchronous composability" has moved from theory to reality and is truly operational.
This transaction carries 0.001 ETH and contains a Rollup status update operation. These two actions are packaged into a single, indivisible overall operation. From a practical application perspective, this means that all calls to L1 and L2 are either successful or all rolled back. There were no cases of partial execution, and no funds were trapped in the bridge channel pending confirmation.
All processing is done within a single Ethereum block, sorted by the L1 builder, so some data from L1 and L2 falls into the same slot. EEZ allows connected Rollups to invoke Ethereum contracts in a single transaction without having to rely on a separate bridging infrastructure.
Issues EEZ aims to solve
EEZ is a Rollup framework supported by Gnosis, Zisk and the Ethereum Foundation. The project was publicly unveiled at the EthCC conference in Cannes in March 2026. Its core design concept is "synchronous composability", which means that smart contracts deployed on EEZ Rollup can call contracts on the Ethereum main network or other EEZ Rollup and receive responses in a single coordinated transaction. The entire process requires no bridging messages, asynchronous relaying, or wrapping assets.
The motivation for this design stems from Ethereum's current fragmentation issues. Currently, nearly $40 billion in value is segregated in more than 60 interconnected layer-2 networks, each with independent liquidity pools and bridging infrastructure. The goal of EEZ is to allow liquidity deployed on a certain Rollup to effectively serve as universal liquidity between all connected Rollup, with ETH as a unified Gas token and the Ethereum main network as the settlement layer.
In addition, the framework is designed to avoid underlying modifications to the Ethereum protocol itself, but instead relies on smart contracts and real-time zero-knowledge proof technology to achieve it. In September 2026, the team completed audit preparations, real-time Blob coding, and tested real-world applications such as CoW Swap and Uniswap v4, paving the way for the experimental mainnet deployment that produced this milestone on Tuesday.
Antuña said the transaction is only part of EEZ's broader roadmap, the ultimate goal of which is to promote interaction and unified liquidity among all levels of Ethereum.
