Singapore Live Stress Test: Sui's Record Throughput Analysis

During a Live Stress Test conducted in Singapore on Wednesday, Sui achieved a staggering 40,614,180 transactions per second (TPS), more than sixfold increasing its own record of 6.09 million TPS set in July. However, this record is mainly due to the efficient participation of more than 10,000 off-chain channels, rather than the actual transaction volume occurring on the Sui main network itself, which is an important difference because the system's future focus will be on artificial intelligence-driven payments.

Why the number of 40 million does not represent native throughput

Sui's programmable channel function is similar to Lightning Network's payment channel. Transactions occur off-chain, but the open and closed status of channels is settled on-chain. These channels can handle payments, messaging, games and other activities. Each closed channel is jointly signed and verified on the chain.

However, the number of 40.6 million provided does not represent the actual level of blockchain native capacity, which is independently covered by Chainspect. CertiK also independently confirmed the results of this exhibition event, and relevant certificates are expected to be provided later. "Transparent and independently verifiable performance measurements will become increasingly important," Yuannan Yang, the company's director of safety engineering, said in Sui's announcement.

Previously, Cryptopolitan reported that CertiK would check the records of the execution process, certificates of successful operations, and supporting documents.

Sui Chases Payout Jackpot

Adeniyi Abiodun, co-founder and chief product officer of Mysten Labs, believes autonomous AI agents can leverage this capability. "There is no market in the world that requires 6 million transactions per second, let alone 40 million: humans don't move that fast, but agents can," he explained in a statement from the Sui Foundation.

Cost plays a crucial role in his argument. Only two on-chain transactions can be used per channel. This means that thousands of intermediate swaps can be carried out at extremely low costs. The potential is huge. According to McKinsey, the payments industry has annual revenue of approximately $2.6 trillion, and by 2030, agent-based AI could put approximately $75 billion in revenue at risk.

Bridging the real-world settlement gap

Handling millions of transactions in the test is different from cross-border capital flows. The Financial Stability Board's goal requires that by 2027, 75% of cross-border retail payments arrive within an hour, reducing average costs to 1% or less. However, its 2025 progress report showed little global improvement and warned that the goals may not be achieved.

Banks are also exploring faster settlement methods. HSBC and Visa have tested round-the-clock stablecoin settlement, while Swift is developing a blockchain-based payment infrastructure. At the same time, the Bank for International Settlements emphasized the significance of trust and finality of settlement in transactions, especially when speed is involved.

A technological milestone that still needs to prove itself

Sui demonstrates the magnitude of traffic its off-chain channels can accommodate. Now is the time to see whether this speed can reduce payment costs, speed up cross-border transfers, and ultimately drive consistent commercial adoption. Currently, the mark of 40.6 million TPS represents a technical achievement. Time will tell whether it affects daily payments.
