MyNearWallet will close on October 31: What does this mean for your NEAR coins

In terminology, this difference is called "self-custody": you own the key, no company holds it for you. MyNearWallet follows this principle and is therefore not a custodian. Because of this, its closure is completely different in nature from the closure of the exchange. Closing the exchange means it takes your money and runs away, while closing the browser wallet just takes away the user interface.

The NEAR protocol has one special feature: it supports readable account names, and an account can carry multiple access keys. Therefore, switching wallets does not technically require transferring coins; it can also be just a key change on the same account. Which method works for you depends on how your account is set up.

Phased plan for October 31, 2026 and 2027

On its sunset page, MyNearWallet wrote that the wallet plans to be discontinued on October 31, 2026. At the same time, the page announced a phased plan starting as early as summer: notices will be released inside the wallet from July 2026, migration guidance assistance will be provided from August to September, and between October to December 2026, the wallet will be reduced to an interface mainly used for migration and recovery functions. Individual features may be restricted or removed as of October 2026. Starting from 2027, only one static information page will be retained.

Features that may disappear from October 2026

In short: October 31 is not the day when things become urgent, but the day when things end completely. What's really becoming urgent is the current month, as features will gradually disappear while the wallet remains officially accessible. The page itself clearly calls this step a "plan" and promises to provide details later, so this does not guarantee that a fixed set of features will be available by the end date.

"Your assets are stored on the chain": The shutdown affects access rights, not ownership.

@NearProtocol official account posted on X (formerly Twitter) on October 6, 2026 stating that MyNearWallet will be closed on October 31, adding: "Your assets are stored on the chain. You just need a new way to access it." The sunset page also points in the same direction and records that accounts, tokens, pledged positions and NFTs remain safe.

This statement is technically correct, but it is not a reason to ignore deadlines. A missing access path is often as expensive in practice as losing a balance because recovery through recovery phrases requires experience and effort. A recovery phrase (often called a seed phrase) is a sequence of twelve or more words from which the private key can be completely recalculated.

Anyone who can no longer find these words faces not just an access problem, but the ultimate problem. Therefore, the coolest interpretation of the NEAR announcement is also the most disturbing: You only have time until the end of the month, and it will only be useful if you use that time.

In practice, this means choosing your wallet according to the same criteria as outside any deadline: What networks do you need? How to protect the key? How does the recovery mechanism work? What if this provider also stops operating two years later? For an overview of the categories and their differences, please see our overview of trading venues and custody models (if you do not plan to hold NEAR permanently on your own anyway).

Pledged Positions and Orders: What will be transferred when switching wallets?

NEAR uses delegated staking. This means: You delegate tokens to the validator that generated the block and receive a portion of its reward without running the server. The delegation hangs on the account, not on the wallet interface where you set it up.

Therefore, the sunset page records accordingly that pledged positions remain safe and confirming balances and pledged positions are part of the migration. But it does not detail the order: how existing delegates are processed during and after the switch is left blank there. This is why the pledge part should be dealt with first rather than last.

Unbinding period and missed benefits

Regardless of the provider, there are two important points here. First, NEAR has an unbonding period: After retrieving the entrusted tokens, you need to wait for several epochs after the pledge is cancelled until they are free to use. Era is the accounting interval of the network during which the set of validators is determined. Secondly, gains will not continue to accumulate during this period. If you start operations one week before October 31, you may end up in the unfortunate situation of having your token still unbinding when the deadline expires.

In addition, there is a development that affects the benefits themselves. On October 3, 2026, cryptoticker.io reported on a governance proposal for the NEAR ecosystem to gradually reduce the issuance of new tokens, with a target of 1.6%. If the proposal is adopted, the pledge yield will fall accordingly because it is basically paid out of that issue. As of this writing, this has not yet been decided.

Seed Phrases and Phishing Attacks: A scam that accompanies every migration deadline

Every shutdown announced is an invitation from scammers for the simple reason: This opportunity provides an excuse they would otherwise have to make up. A message urging you to "verify" or "migrate" an account due to a shutdown may seem like assistance at this stage, hardly like a crude fraud attempt.

Looking at the longer time span, the situation is different from this day. NEAR has risen 127.91% in the past 30 days, while falling slightly at 0.75% in the past 7 days. The market value is approximately US$7 billion, the trading volume of the day is approximately US$1.08 billion, and the circulating supply is approximately 1.308 billion NEAR. The historical high of $20.44 occurred on January 16, 2022; the current price is 73.8% lower than the high.

For up-and-down references, the numbers in the data itself are more useful than the rounded ideal level: a daily low of $4.89 marks the area of market defense for the day, and a daily high of $5.44 marks the area of failure. A gain of about 128% in the past 30 days also means that most holders today have short entry times and therefore lack buffer.

The market was generally affected by compulsory liquidation that day, and its scale was reported with different figures. Finance Magnates said it closed more than $400 million in long positions in about 20 minutes, Mitrade was about $550 million, and Yahoo Finance quoted Coinglass data that showed it was about $696 million in 24 hours. Brent crude oil prices above $101 per barrel and Bitcoin's failure to effectively break through around $87,000 are seen as triggers. None of these sources mentioned specific reasons for NEAR's rise that day; no one claimed that the shutdown was driving up prices, nor did this article.

German Purchase Path: Limitations of MiCA Licensing and Self-Custody

With the full application of the European Union Cryptographic Asset Markets Regulation (MiCA), anyone buying or selling NEAR in Germany must do so through an authorized service provider. MiCA covers companies that trade or exchange crypto assets or hold assets for third parties and requires them to obtain licenses and be subject to ongoing supervision.

For the MyNearWallet case, the dividing line lies at the actual point. The software used to hold your own keys does not provide hosting services to third parties and therefore does not require authorization. That's convenient, but there's a downside: there's no regulator to force operators to stay open, no deposit insurance, and no institution you can complain about shutting down. It is a courtesy, not an obligation, to announce the deadline here.

Regulated pathways operate in very different ways, as recently demonstrated in Germany. BaFin denied the MiCA authorization of the bitcoin.de operator; in this case, the rules regarding segregation and transfer of customer assets apply and customer assets remain with the custodian bank until transferred to another authorized custodian. For details, see our report on bitcoin.de's refusal of MiCA's license. These two cases occurred in the same week and demonstrated the same decision in both directions: under self-custody, you bear the operational risk yourself; under authorized custody, the supervised company bears it, and you bear the counterparty risk in exchange.

Holding period and tax exemptions: This operation is not a sale, exchanges during migration are another matter

When it comes to taxation, the good news comes first: transfers between two wallets in your name are not disposal. The storage location has changed, the owner has not changed, so a new holding period will not begin. For private disposals, Section 23 of the German Income Tax Law provides a one-year period, after which profits are exempt from taxation, plus an annual exemption of € 1,000 since the 2024 annual tax law. The tax exemption means that once exceeded, all proceeds will be taxed, not just the excess.

What is annoying is the details of the migration. As long as you exchange along the way rather than simply transfer, for example because the new wallet provides exchange capabilities across multiple chains, it's an exchange of one crypto asset for another. This exchange is considered a sale followed by purchase for tax purposes; it can trigger a gain and restart the holding period for the new asset. Just because near.com explicitly promotes exchange capabilities across more than 30 chains, this distinction is more important during moving week than at other times.

What records the tax authorities want to see

This creates a document obligation for their own interests. You should be able to prove that both addresses belong to you and record the date, amount, and transaction ID of each transaction. Without such evidence, the Inland Revenue Department can read the outflow of old wallets as sale. Tracking through portfolio tools is more calmer than manual forms. The crypto asset notice issued by the German Federal Ministry of Finance on March 6, 2025 is binding administrative guidance; this article does not replace tax advice for large positions or pledged income.

What does the shutdown explain about the NEAR wallet landscape?

Closing the wallet does not mean a judgment on the network. MyNearWallet emerged as a successor to the early browser wallets previously run by developers and has been the standard answer to accessing NEAR accounts without additional software for years. Now that seat is being filled, in line with a thread that has been visible around NEAR for months: fewer separate interfaces and more bundled into a single account that can work between chains.

There are two interesting things about this for holders. Bundling reduces the number of error locations while also increasing reliance on a single remaining location. Anyone who doesn't want this can use the protocol to provide good conditions for readable accounts and multiple access keys per account, spreading access over two separate routes, rather than hanging everything on one interface.

At the time of writing, the questions that remain open are which wallets will eventually be included in the supported destination list, and how sunset pages and protocol accounts will reconcile their different recommendations. Until then, the simpler truth shared by both sources applies: the account is yours, access is replaceable, and no one replaces it for you.

Shut down MyNearWallet: Your next three steps

1. Inventory positions and commissions
Open your account during October and write down what's there: Free NEAR balance, entrusted tokens (including verifiers), NFT and other tokens. Check that your recovery phrase is complete and clearly readable during the same process. Which wallet categories are potential destinations and how they differ, see our software wallet comparison for details.

2. Release the pledge first, then transfer
Cancel the pledge of the entrusted token in advance so that the unbinding period does not hit October 31, and then move a small test amount before the rest follows. Record the date, amount and ID of each transaction; use our cryptographic tax tool and combination trackers to compare trackers that are more reliable than manual lists.

3. Decide whether you really want to self-custody
If such a deadline is too strenuous for you, the alternative is to have an authorized custodian that oversees and isolates customer positions, which can be found through our overview of regulated crypto exchanges. You trade operational risk for counterparty risk, which is a deliberate choice rather than a second best choice.
