Tokenized stocks are rapidly emerging and becoming a disruptive force that is expected to reshape the structure of traditional stock markets. Unlike the traditional model, in which stocks are traded only during exchange trading hours, usually using a T+2 settlement cycle, and market access restrictions vary from country to country, a new blockchain-based system is becoming increasingly popular.
Stocks on blockchain represent
Under this model, stocks are converted into digital tokens and recorded on a distributed ledger. This shift allows investors to move positions outside regular market trading hours, enjoy faster settlements, and directly integrate these assets with decentralized finance (DeFi) applications.
Essentially, tokenized stocks represent traditional stocks on the blockchain. They are distributed on networks such as Ethereum and Solana, and their expanding ecosystem includes not only the RWA (real-world asset) platform, but also intermediaries, custodians and DeFi protocols. Unlike traditional stocks, these digital securities can be transferred point-to-point without intermediaries and have programmable functions.
Small vocabulary: RWA refers to real-world assets that have been monetized and presented on the blockchain. DeFi is a broad term for financial applications that operate without intermediaries.
Ian De Bode, an executive at Ondo Finance, points out that the primary advantage lies in interoperability-these tokens can be used as collateral in a variety of scenarios such as margin trading, lending markets, and derivatives products.
New use cases and evolution of market structure
One of the most prominent features of tokenized stocks is the ability to buy and sell stocks around the clock. Immediate settlement and enhanced transferability have brought new opportunities for decentralized finance, such as stock-backed loans, perpetual contracts and diversified vaults.
From a market perspective, tokenized stocks allow the platform to broaden its product range. Asset management companies can more efficiently manage liquidity across time zones. This marks a major shift in global accessibility and ongoing transactions compared to existing frameworks.
Comparison: Traditional stocks vs tokenized stocks
Trading hours: Traditional stocks are limited to exchange hours; tokenized stocks support 24/7 trading.
Settlement time: T+2 for traditional stocks; near-instant settlement for tokenized stocks.
Use case: Traditional stock market infrastructure is limited; tokenized stocks are integrated with DeFi.
Regulatory frameworks will be key
Despite strong momentum, regulatory clarity remains the most serious challenge facing the industry. Regulators-especially the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)-need to develop clear and coordinated guidance covering areas such as custody services, investor protection, and securities law compliance.
If regulatory conditions are favorable, stock tokenization is expected to bridge the gap between traditional finance and decentralized finance, but is not expected to change the core structure of stock ownership.
Licensing and liquidity: The new frontier for RWA growth
Advances in tokenization of stocks are part of a broader trend of tokenization of real-world assets. According to DeFiLlama data, the total value of tokenized treasury bonds products and funds reached approximately US$12 billion in the first quarter of 2026.
Experts predict that the next stage in the field will depend on the widespread emergence of license issuance structures, recognition from more jurisdictions, and sufficient liquidity. If these conditions are met, tokenized stocks are expected to provide broader access to investors and the market.
