Sony enters the U.S. stablecoin market and establishes a new trust entity
Sony Bank, a subsidiary of Sony Financial Group, has recently made an important progress. It has obtained preliminary approval from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) to establish a trust company called Connectia Trust. The new subsidiary will focus on the issuance and management of dollar-linked stablecoins, aiming to open up a world in the booming stablecoins field under strict supervision.
Connectia\'s future plans?
Connectia Trust has not yet started operations despite the OCC\'s temporary conditional approval. Sony Bank plans to initially invest $40 million and strategically target the trust company to be fully operational in 2027, subject to final regulatory confirmation. It is worth noting that Connectia\'s business framework will not include traditional banking services and will focus entirely on stablecoin-related activities.
Why did Sony choose to distribute it directly?
Obtaining a national trust license is a strategic move by Sony to gain a more influential position in the stabilizing currency ecosystem. Sony previously worked with Bastion Platforms, but now this path allows it to issue stablecoins directly and establish formal relationships with regulators. The move is expected to streamline key businesses such as issuance, custody and redemption within a federal regulatory framework.
The company stated that it will not conduct any business activities, including stablecoin issuance, until it has obtained all necessary licenses, including final approval from the OCC.
Sony\'s Goals and Challenges in Entering the Stabilocin Field
Sony\'s move into the stablecoin space aims to apply such digital assets to multiple fields such as entertainment and payments, while reducing traditional transaction fees. However, the effort is facing intense scrutiny from banking and consumer groups. Models that combine commercial and financial businesses, as well as issues such as the lack of deposit insurance, pose significant regulatory challenges.
Some people question whether this model is consistent with existing public obligations that traditional banks should assume. Nonetheless, the OCC has addressed these concerns in accordance with its current legal interpretation.
Key Nodes and Future Outlook
Obtaining final approval from U.S. and Japanese regulators is critical to achieving the 2027 launch goal.
Currently, the CEO candidate of Connectia Trust has not yet been determined, and a capable leader needs to be appointed. Sony\'s U.S. branch may need to add a full-time chief financial officer to strengthen financial leadership.
Sony\'s attempt is expected to set a precedent for other non-financial entities exploring access to the regulated U.S. stablecoin market. Following in the footsteps of companies such as Circle and Paxos, Sony\'s progress shows that the competitive landscape is changing-traditional companies are joining the race with established crypto-native companies.
