Key Points
Zapper will cease all operations on August 3, 2026.
At its peak, the platform had 2 million monthly active users and processed US$13 billion in transactions.
The company received US$15 million in Series A financing in 2021 from investors such as Mark Cuban and Sound Ventures.
Zapper\'s closure reflects a broader trend of cryptocurrency platform exits in 2026.
Despite the increase in cryptocurrency venture investment funds, trading volumes have dropped ninefold in the past 10 consecutive quarters.
DeFi\'s early rapid rise
Zapper, a well-known decentralized finance (DeFi) portfolio management tool, has officially announced its permanent closure. Co-founder and CEO Seb Audet announced on Wednesday that the platform will cease operations completely on August 3, 2026, bringing to an end its nearly seven-year journey in the DeFi space.
Audet said in the announcement: \"We made a very difficult decision-to phase out Zapper. Thank you for joining us on this crazy journey.\" He revealed that the team had \"evaluated a variety of different options\" and finally believed that \"orderly shutdown is the best choice.\" When asked about the reasons behind the decision, he gave a blunt explanation: \"In the final analysis, the market has the final say.\"
Launched in 2019, Zapper won Kyber\'s DeFi hackathon the year it was founded, and quickly emerged. This early success prompted the startup to raise $1.5 million in seed funding in early 2020. The momentum continued into May 2021, with Framework Ventures leading a $15 million Series A financing round, with prominent investors including Mark Cuban and Sound Ventures co-founded by actor Ashton Kutcher.
During its peak operating period, Zapper attracted 2 million monthly active users and successfully processed more than US$13 billion in transactions. The platform allows users to connect to cryptocurrency wallets to view DeFi positions, track liquidity pool positions, coordinate liquidity mining activities, and receive alerts of potential airdrops. Later, Zapper also expanded its capabilities to include decentralized exchange aggregation, non-homogeneous token (NFT) capabilities, and community features such as integration with Farcaster.
Growth trend of industry exit
Zapper\'s closure is far from an isolated case. In 2026, many cryptocurrency platforms have announced the shutdown. TapTools, an analytics platform serving the Cardano ecosystem, terminated operations in June. Immediately afterwards, Bitcoin DeFi protocol Botanix also closed a week later, also citing insufficient market demand. This wave of closures has spread to multiple areas: NFT markets Nifty Gateway and Rodeo have closed, SBI\'s cryptocurrency division has been disbanded, and the decentralized email service Dmail has also closed. Even the Cosmos ecosystem wallet Leap has joined the ranks of withdrawing, which together constitutes a continuing shutdown pattern in the cryptocurrency industry.
In April 2025, Zapper suffered a devastating social engineering attack. Malicious actors hacked into the platform\'s domain name and directed users to a fraudulent phishing website. This security incident dealt a heavy blow to it, and the platform was difficult to recover since then.
Although cryptocurrency venture capital funds increased by 57.6% year-on-year to US$4.21 billion in the second quarter of 2026, RootData reported that trading volume has shrunk ninefold in the past 10 quarters. Investment capital is increasingly concentrated in a few projects.
Looking back on Zapper\'s original vision of \"democratizing DeFi access,\" Audet said: \"I do believe that we have helped a large number of users use the chain economy more easily.\" All Zapper infrastructure, including its website, mobile applications and application programming interfaces, will be decommissioned on August 3.
