Mantle officially confirmed the migration of Super Portal from LayerZero to the Chainlink Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP). This is the latest in a series of recent high-profile departures from LayerZero. The total migration value currently exceeds US$7.2 billion.
LayerZero faces a growing wave of departures
Mantle made this decision against the background of a security incident that shocked the cross-chain field. In April 2026, Kelp DAO\'s LayerZero-based bridging protocol was attacked, resulting in losses of US$292 million and 116,500 rsETH items were looted. This incident accelerated the migration trend.
The attack on Kelp DAO was not a flaw in LayerZero\'s core smart contract, but a problem with its flexible security model. LayerZero allows applications to choose their own decentralized verifier network (DVN), with these off-chain participants responsible for verifying events on the source chain and then triggering actions on the target chain. In the case of Kelp DAO, DVN was configured in 1-of-1 mode, which meant that only one validator needed to be breached to authorize fraudulent transfers.
This incident prompted extensive reflection in the DeFi field on cross-chain infrastructure. Mantle joined the migration to CCIP along with Kelp DAO and Lombard Finance. Lombard conducted a security review after the Kelp DAO incident and moved more than $1 billion worth of bitcoin-backed assets from LayerZero to Chainlink CCIP. Other agreements, including Solv, Re.xyz and Kraken, have taken similar actions.
Johann Eid, chief commercial officer of Chainlink Labs, described this trend as \"an ongoing security migration across the industry.\"
Why did the protocol choose CCIP
Chainlink\'s CCIP uses a different and less flexible model. Each cross-chain channel is secured by at least 16 independent node operators operated by Chainlink, which sets a very high threshold for collusion or breach. CCIP also integrates an independent risk management network that monitors abnormal activity and implements value-based rate limits on each channel, acting as a circuit breaker to limit potential losses.
Chainlink recently completed a SOC2 Type 2 review of CCIP, a compliance certification typically associated with enterprise cloud service providers and financial infrastructure companies, making CCIP the only major oracle and interoperability provider to receive this level of certification. SOC 2 Type 2 means that it took months for independent auditors to verify that Chainlink\'s security controls were indeed as effective as advertised over the duration of time.
For Mantle, this decision is in line with its broader platform strategy. The project said it was \"pleased to adopt the Chainlink standard,\" and Mark Veer, head of business development, added that the integration \"enhances Mantle\'s cross-chain capabilities and strengthens our collaboration with Chainlink\'s vast ecosystem.\" Chainlink CCIP has supported more than US$28 trillion in cumulative on-chain transaction value, with an average weekly token transfer volume of approximately US$90 million.
At the same time, LayerZero has withdrawn support for 1-of-1 DVN configurations and announced plans to migrate most routes to the more stringent 5-of-5 validator settings. The agreement still maintains significant transaction volume, but the reputational damage caused by the Kelp DAO incident continues to affect underlying infrastructure decisions across the industry.
