Stacks has increased by more than 100% in the past 90 days, institutional bitcoin pledges have driven new demand for STX
Driven by institutional bitcoin pledges, Stacks (STX) has increased by more than 100% in the past 90 days. This move has created new usage scenarios for STX, and the demand is expected to grow further as more bitcoins enter future lock-up periods.
Market performance and key drivers
STX rose by more than 100% in 90 days, thanks to the recovery of Stacks ecological activity and the resonance between the launch of institutional Bitcoin pledges and the rise in market conditions. Among institutions that use direct bitcoin pledge bonds, the value of STX they commit to invest accounts for approximately 5% of their bitcoin positions, a mechanism that creates continued demand for tokens as more bitcoins join the project.
According to CoinGecko data, as of October 6, STX was trading at approximately US$0.38, up approximately 18% from the previous week. In the 90 days before September 27, the token has climbed by 108%.
This rise in the market is consistent with many unique development nodes of Stacks: including Muneeb Ali's return as CEO of Stacks Labs on September 30, and the release of the network's first institutional bitcoin pledged bonds. The latter introduces a new use for STX in the pledge process. These events provide multiple specific catalysts for traders, especially as many major altcoins struggle to replicate STX gains.
Bitcoin pledge is particularly important for long-term narratives because it provides institutions with a way to earn Bitcoin rewards while creating a separate use scenario for STX. However, Bitcoin pledge alone cannot fully explain the overall 90-day increase. Market conditions and interest in the Stacks ecosystem renewed also drove prices. But unlike short-term price catalysts, the pledge model establishes a measurable link between institutional Bitcoin participation and the amount of STXs needed to support it.
Genesis Bond has put this relationship into practice, and Bond 2 and subsequent lock-up periods will test whether the model is repeatable as more bitcoins enter the project.
How does Bitcoin Pledge Create Demand for STX?
Bitcoin pledge on Stacks allows BTC holders to earn bitcoin-denominated rewards without changing the Bitcoin Proof of Work (PoW) consensus. In Stacks '"Proof of Transfer"(PoX) system, miners compete for Stacks blocks and receive STX by committing BTC. The BTC promised during this process becomes the source of rewards allocated through the pledge system.
For the self-escrow protocol bond path, participants lock native BTC on Bitcoin Layer 1 while committing separately to STX on Stacks. According to the Bitcoin pledge model, the required STX accounts for approximately 5% of the value of the Bitcoin position. For example, if participants pledge $1 million worth of BTC, approximately $50,000 worth of STX would be needed under the current model.
This relationship creates a use scenario for STX that does not rely on institutions taking directional positions on the token. Institutions seeking Bitcoin gains through direct protocol bonds need STX because the token provides capacity support for their Bitcoin positions. If more bitcoin participates through this channel and the agreement requirements remain unchanged, higher demands will be placed on STX capacity.
"Genesis Bond" provides the first production environment test. Previous reports have shown that HashKey Cloud, together with 21Shares, UTXO Management and Sypher Capital, formed the first institutional group. Among them, HashKey Cloud, 21Shares and UTXO Management use a self-managed path, while Sypher Capital participates through StackingDAO's liquidity pledge path.
A 14-day review of the "Genesis Bonds" released by Stacks shows that as of September 24, 230 BTC had been pledged, along with 3.57 million STXs. In the first two weeks, participants received a reward of 0.28 BTC. These 3.57 million STXs represent commitment tokens used to support pledged positions, but this does not mean that participating institutions purchased the same number of STXs on the market. The "Genesis Bond" proves that the link between institutional Bitcoin participation and STX demand is already in operation. Future lock-up periods will determine whether the model can become a recurring mechanism and handle larger amounts of Bitcoin capital.
How much STX does it take to pledge large-scale Bitcoin?
If Bitcoin pledges increase from hundreds to thousands, the demand for STX will become more significant. Since the direct pledge model requires the value of STX to be approximately 5% of the Bitcoin position, the number of tokens required depends on the size of Bitcoin's participation and the relative prices of BTC and STX.
Take the market relationship on October 2 as an example. At that time, the value of one STX was approximately 0.0000439 BTC. If there are 500 BTC participating through direct bonds, an STX worth 25 BTC is needed. At that exchange rate, this position requires approximately 5.69 million STXs. If it reaches 1,000 BTC, illustrative demand will reach approximately 11.38 million STXs; a 5,000 BTC position corresponds to approximately 56.89 million STXs; and 10,000 BTC requires approximately 113.77 million STXs, accounting for approximately 6.1% of the current total of 1.87 billion STXs in circulation.
These data are only scenarios rather than predictions. Actual demand will vary with STX's exchange rate to BTC, agreement parameters, and the mixed ratio of direct participation and pooled participation.
Bond 2 will be the next testing stage, but its structure is different from the Genesis Bond. Stacks said on October 5 that "Bond 2" will be the first period when most capacity will be run through liquidity pledges. StackingDAO has the main allocation, with Xverse and 21Shares also participating. The BTC deployment deadline is Bitcoin block 970,450, and bonds are expected to start around October 10.
The shift to liquidity pledges aims to increase the efficiency of Bitcoin capital, allowing BTC promised to projects to remain available in other applications. For Stacks, this could help expand the Bitcoin capital market by providing institutional holders with more ways to leverage their BTC without selling underlying assets.
The second lock-up period followed the "Creation Bond", when 230 BTC was committed. Stacks said institutional capacity will continue to expand during subsequent lock-up periods, starting with Bond 3.
How can liquidity pledges change the STX demand model?
Bitcoin pledges are designed to provide an underlying income layer for BTC, but longer-term opportunities go beyond earning rewards from locking in Bitcoin positions. According to the Stacks roadmap, between 2027 and 2032, the model will start with Bitcoin pledging anchor capital, and subsequent infrastructure improvements will prepare for lending, transactions and other financial activities.
Liquidity pledges are a way to maintain capital availability. Participants can receive stBTC that represents the underlying revenue-producing positions, while the underlying Bitcoin pledge continues. Bitcoin holders can then use that liquid position in borrowing, borrowing, trading, providing liquidity or making payments, rather than leaving capital economically idle during the bond period.
One approach is to use stBTC as collateral in lending markets such as Zest to lend stablecoins. The Bitcoin Native Financial Roadmap details how projects such as StackingDAO, Zest Protocol, and Bitflow build products around Bitcoin's associated capital. The Bitcoin Collateral Library in Zest's plan is designed to allow holders to lend stablecoins against native BTC retained in Bitcoin Layer 1 self-managed vaults. StackingDAO provides a liquidity pledge layer, while Bitflow provides transaction infrastructure that allows bitcoin-linked assets to find liquidity.
Therefore, the long-term model starts with Bitcoin pledges as the underlying income layer. Liquidity pledges can make the resulting position available, allowing the same Bitcoin capital to enter other financial applications while continuing to earn pledge rewards. Stacks describes this process as three phases: first, Bitcoin pledges anchor BTC capital; second, network upgrades prepare infrastructure for heavy-duty activities; and finally, Bitcoin native finance builds lending, transactions, programmable capital and other applications around these liquidity.
Whether this model can be developed on a large scale remains to be verified. The growth of stBTC between 2027 and 2032, lending activity, Bitcoin mortgage vaults, and the development of trading and payment applications will provide measurable evidence to determine whether Bitcoin pledges are becoming a gateway to the larger Bitcoin capital market.
How can more Bitcoin activity on Stacks improve STX effectiveness?
If more bitcoin flows into Stacks in the next few years, STX could play two roles. The first is created by Bitcoin pledges: institutions that use direct protocol bonds commit STX along with their BTC, so under the current model, larger Bitcoin positions may require more STX.
Once Bitcoin flows into apps on Stacks, there is another use for the token. STX is used to pay for transaction fees, smart contracts and calculations on the network. Its existing network utility means that Bitcoin used for lending, transactions, liquidity or payments will generate activities that require STX-.
For example, a Bitcoin position may have its liquid representative form used as collateral for a loan, traded, or provided liquidity before earning a Bitcoin pledge reward. In this model, STX supports initial pledge positions, which are then used for transactions as Bitcoin is moved through the Stacks application. This is where STX's long-term philosophy as an efficient Bitcoin capital capacity lies. Bitcoin can earn basic income without sitting idle, while STX supports both the pledge process and network activity around that capital.
However, the current Bitcoin pledge reward comes from the BTC promised by Stacks miners who produce Stacks blocks through PoX competition, rather than from fees incurred by borrowing, transactions or other applications. Under the current revenue model, miners commit BTC when competing to produce Stacks blocks. The winning miner receives STX block rewards and transaction fees, while the promised BTC is allocated through the pledge system.
Activities beyond bonds are also important. The growth of stBTC, Bitcoin mortgage vaults, lending, transactions and payments will allow more pledged bitcoins to play a role on Stacks, rather than making Bitcoin pledge a separate income product. Data from Bond 2 and subsequent lock-in period data will help Stacks determine how much BTC can accommodate in future rounds as the network moves towards PoX6.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Why does Bitcoin Pledge create demand for STX?
Direct Bitcoin Pledge requires participants to commit to STX as well as their BTC. As more bitcoin enters through direct-negotiated bonds, under the current model, more STX is needed to support these positions.
How much STX does a direct Bitcoin pledge on Stacks require?
Direct Bitcoin pledges currently require STX worth approximately 5% of the BTC position. For example, a Bitcoin position worth $1 million would require approximately $50,000 worth of STX, although the number of tokens will vary with the exchange rate of STX to BTC.
Do institutions buy STX to participate in Bitcoin pledge?
Institutions participating through direct bonds need to commit to STX, but this does not necessarily mean they are buying these tokens on the open market. Participants may already hold STX or obtain it through other arrangements, so a committed STX should not be equated to a new market purchase.
How will future bitcoin pledged bonds affect STX demand?
If a larger amount of BTC enters through direct negotiated bonds, future lock-in periods may increase STX demand. The impact will depend on the size of each bond, STX's exchange rate to BTC, and the allocation of participation between direct pledge, pooled and liquidity pledge.
Will liquidity pledges generate the same direct STX demand?
No. Liquidity pledges will not generate the same direct STX demand as self-custody agreement bonds. Participants move BTC to Stacks through sBTC and receive stBTC that represents a pledged position, which can then remain liquid and be used in other applications.
