SOL Musk accuses Ultraman of stealing Apple technology: OpenAI faces trade secrets lawsuit
Elon Musk publicly accused OpenAI CEO Sam Altman of stealing Apple technology after Apple filed a federal trade secrets lawsuit against OpenAI and two former Apple employees. Musk posted on the X platform: "First he stole an open source artificial intelligence charity project, and now he stole all of Apple's mobile phone technology." Then he asked Altman: "What else do you want to stage next?"
Apple sues OpenAI and hardware division for theft
The attack stems from Apple's lawsuit against OpenAI, hardware director Tangye Tan, former Apple engineer Liu Chang and io Products. The indictment alleges that OpenAI obtained confidential information from Apple through former employees, recruitment interviews and supplier relationships, and used it to build parts of its consumer hardware business. Apple claims that Liu Chang retained access to the company's internal systems after leaving office and downloaded confidential hardware files while working for OpenAI. Tan was accused of encouraging Apple employees who participated in OpenAI interviews to discuss unreleased projects and bring physical components into meetings.
OpenAI denies trade secret allegations
OpenAI denies using Apple's confidential technology. Spokesperson Drew Pusatri said: "We have no interest in the trade secrets of other companies. We are always focused on building innovative technologies that empower users around the world." In the indictment, Apple said OpenAI's hardware business was "rotten from the root" because of its alleged reliance on embezzled trade secrets. Apple asked the court to bar the defendant from using the disputed information and order him to return or destroy confidential materials.
OpenAI acquired Jonathan Ivey's io Products in 2025, marking its expansion from ChatGPT into dedicated consumer hardware. There are currently more than 400 former Apple employees working for OpenAI, and Tan has been with Apple for more than 24 years, holding senior positions in the iPhone and Apple Watch businesses.
From cooperation to confrontation: The game behind the hardware dispute
This hardware conflict occurred after years of cooperation between the two companies. In 2024, Apple will integrate ChatGPT into Apple Intelligence, allowing Siri and writing tools to send some requests to OpenAI's model. Since then, Apple has continued to expand its own AI system while facing investor pressure for delays and execution-including the latest Siri AI demonstration that wiped its intraday market value by approximately $230 billion.
Musk revives OpenAI nonprofit mission controversy
The "open source artificial intelligence charity project" Musk mentioned once again accuses Altman and OpenAI of deviating from the organization's original nonprofit mission. Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015 and later sued the company, Altman and Greg Brockman, claiming that his early capital injection was based on a promise that OpenAI would remain non-profit and develop artificial intelligence for the public good. He provided approximately $38 million in funding before leaving. In May, a federal jury dismissed Musk and Altman's charges after hearing testimony from him. Musk continued to publicly criticize Altman, including multiple "scam Altman" posts that later spawned an unrelated Solana memin and cost a trader a loss of $150,000.
The case of Apple v. Liu Chang was filed on July 10 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California with case number 5:26-cv-07078.
