U.S. manufacturing declines after seven consecutive months of growth, and artificial intelligence sp

U.S. manufacturing output fell in August, making it difficult for the AI boom to fully boost industry.

In August, U.S. manufacturing output fell 0.3% month-on-month, ending the previous seven consecutive months of growth momentum and failing to meet the market expected 0.3% increase. Overall industrial production was flat.

The contrast is striking because investments related to artificial intelligence (AI) are still supporting parts of U.S. industry through spending on data centers, semiconductors, servers and power infrastructure.

The seven-game-winning record ends

This weak trend is beyond the scope of the overall data. Output in consumer durables manufacturing fell 0.5%, and commercial equipment production also fell. Despite this, the overall level of manufacturing is still about 0.9% higher than a year ago, indicating that the current situation is more a weakening of growth momentum than a broad industrial contraction.

The utility sector provided an important hedging effect, with output growing by 1.8%, helping to keep total industrial output stable.

The AI boom cannot benefit all factories

The increase in AI spending makes this slowdown even more profound. Billions of dollars are pouring into the infrastructure that is powering the technology boom, creating demand in areas such as semiconductors, electrical equipment, power generation and construction. However, these expenditures have not benefited all manufacturers equally.
