Review of the first anniversary of Bitcoin hitting an all-time high
October 6, 2026 coincides with a full year since Bitcoin (BTC) hit a all-time high. According to market data, Bitcoin's historical high of $126,198.07 was triggered on October 6, 2025.
This round of rise is driven by a combination of multiple forces: strong inflows of cash ETF funds, continued accumulation by institutional investors, and a supportive U.S. policy environment-including the establishment of the "Strategic Bitcoin Reserve" in March 2025. It is worth noting that the process of hitting this peak is not overnight. Before breaking the $126,000 mark in October 2025, Bitcoin hit a new high of $111,814 in May, reached $122,838 in July, and climbed further to $124,128 in August.
During that short window of time, market sentiment was firm and bullish, and assets seemed to be about to usher in a new era. However, this optimism did not last long. Although Bitcoin peaked at $126,000 in October 2025, the subsequent tariff shock and a wave of liquidations that began on October 10 pushed the BTC price below $105,000. Starting from its peak on October 6, 2025, Bitcoin fell by about 18% in about a month, and continued to decline in December 2025, before partially recovering.
Current situation and future outlook
Twelve months later, the price of Bitcoin is still well below its historical record. As of this anniversary, Bitcoin was trading at approximately $86,189, down approximately 32% from its all-time high, and the cumulative decline over the past year was 30%. Still, the magnitude of this correction is relatively mild compared to previous cycles. Looking back at history, Bitcoin has fallen about 85% after its 2013 high, about 84% after its 2017 high, and about 77% after its 2021 high.
The road back to new highs may take time. Historical cycles show that Bitcoin typically takes 28 to 38 months to surpass each previous peak. Based on past patterns, it seems unlikely that a record high will be reached before the end of 2027.
In the short term, macroeconomic conditions are key variables. The Federal Reserve's meeting scheduled for October 27 - 28 may play a key role in determining whether Bitcoin will continue its summer rally or start a correction, especially as oil prices exceed $100 a barrel and ETF inflows slow. Currently, BTC is still in the consolidation stage. In early October 2026, Bitcoin opened at close to US$84,800. October, historically known as the "Uptober", has seen Bitcoin prices rise in six of the past eight years, although it ended in losses in 2018 and 2025. Whether history in 2026 will repeat itself remains an unsolved mystery.
