Ethereum Glamstam upgrade activated as planned on Sepolia Test Network
On Tuesday, Ethereum's "Glamstam" upgrade was launched as planned on the Sepolia Public Test Network, with the activation time being 13:53 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). This upgrade embeds the Proponder-Builder Separation Mechanism (PBS) into the protocol layer, introduces block-level access lists and a new Gas pricing mechanism to optimize the performance of the Ethereum base layer.
According to the Ethereum Foundation, the activation dates for the Hoodi test network and the Ethereum main network have not yet been determined. Ethereum developers aim to increase network capacity by testing on the Sepolia Public Test Network before deploying code to the main network. The foundation said that the Glamstam upgrade follows last year's Fusaka upgrade and further advances the progress of the "Ethereum L1 Expansion Roadmap."
Core changes to the Glamestead upgrade
According to the foundation, the main functions of this upgrade change the way blocks are constructed and processed:
- Embedded Proponder-Builder Separation (ePBS): This mechanism integrates the handover process between block proposers and block builders directly into the protocol itself. Specifically, the proposer will include the builder's commitment to execute the payload, which will then be revealed by the builder.
- Block level access list: This list records the accounts involved in the block, storage status, and status changes caused by each transaction. "These lists allow clients to read state from disk in parallel, verify transactions in parallel, and calculate state roots more efficiently," the foundation noted.
- Gas re-pricing: The upgrade adjusts the Gas cost structure to better reflect the load pressure on nodes caused by execution processes and state growth.
In addition, the Glamsterdam page on Ethereum.org points out that the ePBS mechanism extends the time window for chunk data to propagate in the network from 2 seconds to about 9 seconds, thereby improving the network's fault tolerance and efficiency.
Sepolia fork tests 200 million Gas limit
Sepolia testnet also provides verifiers with an open environment for testing higher block Gas limits. According to the foundation, Prysm 7.2.0 and Teku 26.9.1 versions will default to a Gas limit of 60 million after activation. If the verifier wants to propose a block of 200 million Gas, it must be configured manually.
However, Prysm client developers released version 7.2.1 on Monday. According to release notes, this release allows verifiers on the Sepolia network to support the 200 million Gas limit by default after fork activation.
Shortly after the upgrade was launched, Ethereum community contributor Pooja Ranjan posted a post on the X platform saying: "Glamstam is now online in Sepolia!" She added that the activation included a total of 18 core EIPs and seven other EIP proposals.
Subsequent planning and timetable
The next step will be the advancement of the Hoodi Test Network. The foundation emphasized that activation dates for Hoodi and Mainnet have not yet been finalized. Previously, in May, the upgrade plan was postponed to the third quarter; while the Ethereum.org website currently lists the expected time for main network deployment as the fourth quarter, but there is no exact date.
Meanwhile, developers have begun planning for the next upgrade and have locked EIP-8141 as part of the 2027 Hogotá upgrade.
