Abstract announces closure: consumer-grade Ethereum Layer-2 is difficult to break through the bottleneck of product-market fit
Abstract, the consumer-oriented Ethereum Layer-2 blockchain project built by Igloo Inc., the parent company of "Pudgy Penguins", announced on Tuesday that it will cease operations this year. The project stated that it decided to terminate the service due to difficulties in scale development and finding product-market Fit.
Abstract pointed out in its official X platform post that its model focusing on "Consumer Crypto" ultimately proved to be an unsustainable business model. Abstract will be launched on the main network in January 2025, aiming to promote the popularization of encryption technology by targeting the mainstream entertainment sector. For users, the platform is committed to eliminating many of the complexities in traditional blockchain operations to enhance the user experience.
Huge losses and strategic reflection
Luca Netz, CEO of Igloo Inc., said: "What most people don't understand is that Igloo Inc. has been providing financial support for Abstract for the past 18 months." He further explained: "In two years, we have lost tens of millions of dollars, even though we have built consumer-grade products, formed an all-star team, introduced some of the world's top brands, and built a community of millions of people, but we still have not found the match between the product and the market."
Abstract's closure highlights the limitations of its "consumer-first" strategy. Both Abstract and Netz pointed out that the extremely low participation of institutional investors, coupled with weak liquidity and limited decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystems, has severely restricted the project's growth potential.
It is worth noting that although more than 144 applications have been deployed on the network, attracting more than 400,000 users, and partnerships have been reached with well-known brands such as Red Bull Racing and Disney, the above structural issues have not been resolved.
Asset Migration Guidelines
Abstract calls on users holding online funds to transfer assets across chains. The network will be officially closed on December 15, 2026. Users can operate through the "Migration Hub" or "Native Bridge". Any funds that fail to complete cross-chain transfers before the deadline will be inaccessible.
In addition, Abstract said its engineering and ecosystem teams will also assist in migrating Abstract-based projects to other blockchain networks.
Industry background: Several blockchain projects face closure
Abstract has joined a growing list of blockchain networks that are scheduled to phase out this year due to difficulties in establishing sustainable business models. Previously, Ethereum Layer-2 project Blast said last week that its operating costs had exceeded revenue; while Botanix, which focuses on Bitcoin, announced its closure in June due to failure to find enough products to fit the market.
