Wallets associated with the U.S. government transferred $470 million worth of BTC, WBTC and USDT to suspected Coinbase Prime addresses. The assets were confiscated from Bitfinex hackers and Alameda Research. The transfer did not confirm a sale, so the final disposal of the funds is unclear.

According to data from blockchain smart platform Arkham, on October 7, the U.S. government moved approximately $470 million in BTC, WBTC and USDT. The assets were moved to addresses that may be associated with Coinbase Prime, marking another wave of crypto assets flowing into institutional accounts, but it was not confirmed whether a sale took place.

However, the reason why this incident is worthy of attention lies in the source of funds. According to Arkham, the amounts were confiscated from Bitfinex hackers and were also linked to Alameda Research.

Why do U.S. government transfers attract so much attention?

Although the value involved has attracted attention among cryptocurrency observers, it is equally important that blockchain shows "capital flows" rather than "completed transactions."

Arkham pointed out in his latest post on Platform X (formerly Twitter) that these specific amounts have been transferred to addresses that may belong to Coinbase Prime deposit addresses. This means that a series of events may occur after the transfer, from completion of the sale to deposit and warehousing, or even use in other ways.

In fact, what is displayed on the blockchain is only the flow of funds, and it cannot establish or confirm any specific intention of the relevant wallet.

It is worth noting that in some previous cases, the U.S. government has used Coinbase Prime to conduct similar transactions. In early July, about $288 million in Bitcoin and Ethereum were transferred to Coinbase Prime, and news reports at the time stated that only deposits were made and not sold. To date, Arkham has also noted that Coinbase Prime has been a recipient of government-linked funds.

Therefore, the latest transfers can be seen in the broader context of several large government-related capital flows that have occurred in the past few months.

Bitcoin is only part of the transfer

Confirmed Bitcoin movements are only part of the transaction. In addition to BTC, the U.S. government also transferred WBTC and USDT. BTC and WBTC represent different forms of Bitcoin, while USDT is a stablecoin pegged to the U.S. dollar.

Although WBTC is essentially a token wrapped on top of BTC, in practice it is a homogeneous token and therefore differs from native currencies in terms of use cases and risk factors.

Essentially, the addition of these two additional crypto assets increases the public's understanding of information on government-held crypto assets, but only to a certain extent.

Deposits can occur before the sale, but may also reflect a transfer of custody or internal asset management. Deposits may occur before the sale, or they may represent a transfer of custody rights or internal asset management.

Therefore, characterization of the $470 million move described this time as a "sale" exceeds what is supported by on-chain data. For Bitcoin investors, the important message is that the asset has moved, but its final destination and disposal method are unclear.

The U.S. government's previous move of $103 million adds another layer of complexity

As The Coin Republic reported on October 7, its associated wallet has transferred approximately $71.56 million worth of 8.33.599 BTC to Coinbase Prime, and transferred approximately $31.63 million worth of 40, 285 BNB was transferred to a new wallet with a total value of $103.19 million.

However, the list of assets involved in this particular transfer is clearly different, and the origin of Arkham's traceability is different.

While the $470 million moved on October 7 appears to have come from Bitfinex hackers, the previous one was linked to Alameda Research.

The $103 million transfer made a day earlier from a government-linked address is noteworthy, but it would be unwise to link the two transactions specifically. What is confirmed is that both transactions occurred and reflect the broader flow of government-linked crypto funds.
