Netflix releases a trailer for the FTX Prequel Series, focusing on SBF and Carolyn Allison

Video streaming platform Netflix recently released a trailer for its eight-episode series. Set on the eve of the collapse of cryptocurrency exchange FTX, the show revolves around former CEO Sam "SBF" Bankman-Fried and his colleague and girlfriend Caroline Ellison, who heads her sister company Alameda Research.

In a news posted on Platform X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, Netflix showed off clips of the new series that will be launched on November 19, calling it a "story about the disappointed talents and love behind the FTX scandal." The work, starring Anthony Boyle as Bankman-Fried and Julia Garner as Allison, seems to focus on the idea that "betting all the chips every time is the mathematically optimal strategy." This is likely to point to high-risk investment behavior made by the crypto exchange using user funds.

In the trailer, Garner plays Allison: "It's not a bad thing to lie for a noble purpose." The line echoed Allison's testimony in the 2023 Bankman-Fried criminal trial. At the time, she pointed out that Bankman-Fried believed that the rules for lying and stealing did not necessarily apply to "Effective Altruism." This philosophy emphasizes doing as much good as possible, including through "earning to give"-that is, accumulating wealth and donating it to charity.

With the collapse and bankruptcy of the FTX exchange, Bankman-Fried, Allison and others associated with FTX and Alameda were prosecuted in December 2022. Allison accepted a plea deal and testified against SBF at trial, while Bankman-Fried chose to go to trial. In the end, he was found guilty of seven counts of felony fraud and sentenced to 25 years in prison. As of October, Bankman-Fried still held a pending motion seeking an amnesty from President Donald Trump and asking the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn his conviction. Allison was released from federal custody in January this year.
