Ledger, the world's largest hardware wallet manufacturer, launches an investigation: More than US$86 million in cryptocurrency assets are suspected to have been stolen
Ledger, the world's largest hardware wallet manufacturer, has launched an internal investigation into allegations of theft of cryptocurrency assets from some users in Southeast Asia. On-chain analysis showed that hundreds of wallets were affected, and the total amount of stolen cryptocurrency may exceed $86 million. Binance founder Zhao Changpeng (CZ) also commented on the matter.
Ledger said the incidents may be related to equipment purchased from a supplier named "CryptoBilis" and asked the company to suspend sales and shipments until the investigation is completed. The company also advises users who have purchased Ledger devices from CryptoBilis in the past 90 days not to set up a new device for the time being. For users who have already set up their devices, Ledger recommends that they create new mnemonic phrases, switch to a new trusted Ledger device, and move assets to a safe location.
Detailed investigation progress and expert opinions
On-line researcher Specter revealed that he traced suspicious addresses that received funds from hundreds of victim wallets on the Ethereum, Wavelength Division and Bitcoin networks. Specter estimates that the total damage caused by the attack exceeded $86 million. However, the common methods used in the attack have not yet been fully determined. The study emphasized that there is currently no evidence of a direct breach of Ledger equipment or the company's core infrastructure.
Binance founder Zhao Changpeng (CZ) pointed out that preliminary investigations revealed that the incident may be related to a supply chain attack related to a single supplier. He said a small number of users may have purchased counterfeit or tampered with Ledger equipment. CZ specifically warns users who have recently purchased Ledger equipment to be vigilant, emphasizing that Ledger is one of the oldest and most reliable hardware wallet manufacturers in the industry and its security has been fully verified over the years.
Zhao Changpeng also expressed his belief that participants in the BNB ecosystem and other actors in the cryptocurrency field will provide assistance to track and recover stolen funds.
