Former FTX COO says Netflix shows bear little resemblance to...

Former FTX executive criticizes Netflix series for its portrayal of bankruptcy process that is inconsistent with facts

Former FTX executive Constance Wang criticized Netflix's upcoming dramatic adaptation of the exchange's collapse. She believes that the show's portrayal of Sam Bankman-Fried, Caroline Ellison and working life within the company is very different from the situation she witnessed before FTX went bankrupt in November 2022.

Wang, a former chief operating officer and senior management position in FTX Digital Markets, responded after Netflix released a full-length trailer for the eight-episode limited series "The Altruists." The show is scheduled to premiere on November 19. "The place where I work is very different from the scene presented in the show." Wang said she dismissed the trailer's excessive emphasis on parties, personal relationships and conflicts among executives. Netflix describes the series as a drama inspired by the real FTX fraud case and places the relationship between Bankman-Fried, played by Anthony Boyle, and former Alameda Research CEO Ellison, played by Julia Garner, at the heart of the story.

Where exactly did Netflix deviate from the truth?

Wang pointed out that FTX has fewer than 200 employees and described a workplace where many employees routinely work 16 to 18 hours a day, rather than the party-oriented environment depicted in the trailer. She also questioned Ellison's characterization, saying she had never seen former Alameda executives show as radical behavior as the trailer suggests. Wang said that before the post-bankruptcy reports emerged, many employees were unaware of the romantic relationship between Ellison and Bankman-Fried. Her claims directly refute the emotional-oriented framework Netflix uses to promote the show.

Of course, this does not represent the experience of every FTX employee, and "The Altruists" is a dramatic series, not a documentary. Still, Wang's comments provided a rare direct objection from insiders during the rise and fall of FTX.

Investor Revelation: The core of financial failure is not personal relationships

Entertainment narratives may focus on characters, but the ultimate core of the financial crisis lies in client funds, Alameda and missing control mechanisms.

What was the real reason for the FTX crash?

Established criminal records rely less on workplace culture or personal relationships. In November 2023, prosecutors proved that billions of dollars in customer deposits were diverted to Alameda Research, and Bankman-Fried was convicted on seven counts of fraud and conspiracy. The funds were used for investments, political donations, real estate purchases and repaying Alameda's loans, while FTX customers were told their assets were being safely kept. In March 2024, Bankman-Fried was sentenced to 25 years in federal prison and ordered to confiscate more than $11 billion.

Subsequently, Bankman-Fried failed to overturn the conviction on appeal, and the Court of Appeal subsequently issued an order upholding the 25-year sentence and the confiscation order. Ellison pleaded guilty to fraud and conspiracy charges and became a key government witness against Bankman-Fried. Given her cooperative attitude, she was sentenced to two years in prison in September 2024. Ellison has since returned to the workforce by working for the nonprofit organization Manifund.

Why is the narrative framework of the series so important?

Wang said the collapse not only harmed customers, but also employees. She claims she lost everything on the platform and became the last employee to leave Bahamas after Bankman Fried was extradited. So her criticism is not to deny the fraud that led to FTX's collapse, but to challenge Netflix's portrayal of employees 'actions in the process and question whether portraying Bankman-Fried and Ellison as the center of a dramatic love story would obscure the financial mechanisms that led to one of the crypto industry's biggest failures.
