Differences between the 90 cases recorded by the French government and the public tracking platform do not necessarily mean a data conflict. Police records typically contain attempted crimes, threats, extortion and undisclosed cases, while private databases rely mainly on cases that can be independently identified through news reports or other public sources. Previously, preliminary statistics from the French police had put the total number at 77 (as of mid-year), much higher than the number visible in public databases. Chainalysis also found that 93% of French victims in known places of residence were residents rather than tourists. In addition, more than 40% of cases involve relatives or associates of the cryptocurrency holder, rather than the holder himself.

Investor revelation: Cryptocurrency security is gradually expanding to protect the connection between investors 'identities, physical addresses and their recognizable digital wealth, rather than just ensuring the security of the wallet itself.

Does data breaches encourage criminals to choose targets?

One of the strongest explanations for the high concentration of attacks in France is the exposure of personal financial information. Although public evidence has not yet confirmed that a single leak led to a full wave of crime, Chainalysis pointed to a suspected case that occurred in 2024: a French tax official accused of selling data packages containing information about wealthy cryptocurrency holders, including names, addresses, phone numbers, positions and tax records. The company has observed a sharp acceleration in violence since late 2024.

In January 2026, another leak at French cryptocurrency tax software provider Waltio added another layer of risk. Waltio said the leaked information included customer email addresses, 2024 gains or losses, and cryptocurrency balances used for tax calculations. Importantly, Waltio emphasized that the attacker did not obtain postal addresses, wallet addresses, private keys, transaction history or bank information. However, the exposed data could still indicate that an email account belongs to a person holding cryptocurrency and provide the approximate size of its assets. This distinction is important because target selection may combine multiple sources. Criminals may associate leaked financial data with social media data, publicly identified companies, chain activities, or information provided by insiders.

Why are relatives targeted?

Targeting of family members suggests that some attacks are detected before violence is committed. Cryptocurrency holders may use hardware wallets and multi-signature mechanisms to secure assets, but attackers turn to kidnap or threaten people close to them to force cooperation. There have been many such cases in France. In May this year, attackers allegedly tried to kidnap the wife of "The Sandbox" co-founder Sébastien Borget, and one of the suspects sneaked into her residence disguised as a courier. The attempt failed due to the intervention of nearby residents. Other cases involve home intrusions, targeting relatives of cryptocurrency executives, and targeting victims at addresses associated with former wealthy residents.

(Wrench Attacks)?
