Coinbase Card:
One significant difference between this card and the U.S. version is that the U.S. version is issued by Bank of America and offers a reward program. Many English commentaries describe this version. Data on rewards, card fees and ATM cash withdrawal fees do not apply to the European version of cards, which is the main reason for errors in many German comparison articles.
Zero transaction fees: Does Coinbase charge the payment itself?
Coinbase's attitude towards card payment itself is very clear. Its Coinbase Card help page for EU users states that there is no transaction fee for spending using local currency, USD Coin or supported cryptocurrencies. Coinbase also does not charge its own fees for cash withdrawals, but notes that machine operators may charge.
This page prevents automatic crawling; it can be read normally in a normal browser. Two important conclusions can be drawn from this: First, the "zero payment fee" is a statement of fact, not a marketing promise; and second, the promise does not mention the exchange rate at which your balance will be converted to euros, which is where the leverage is hidden.
Every card payment initiated from an encrypted balance starts with a conversion and the price is determined at this moment.
Exchange rate conversion is the true cost of the card
Card payments from encrypted balances are actually a combination of two transactions: the merchant receives euros, and your position surrenders encrypted assets. In between, Coinbase performs a sale operation at the instant of payment. The exchange rate for this sale determines how much of the balance reaches the merchants.
Each trading platform profits from the Bid-Ask Spread at this time. In the card business, conversions do not occur on the professional order book, but at the provider's retail price. The gap between the two is measurable, and the results are often much more severe than most people expect.
Our actual measurement: On the order book, the conversion cost is only 0.01%
To determine the order of magnitude, the newsroom analyzed the price differences between six euro trading pairs in Coinbase's public order book, as of just after 1 a.m. on Sunday. We measure the difference between the best bid price and the best ask price, which is the distance that a sell operation must cross. Cryptoticker.io collected this data on October 11, 2026.
Data shows that the price difference between Bitcoin and Euro is 0.0088%, Ethereum is 0.0116%, and USD Coin is 0.0112%. Solana is 0.0204%, XRP is 0.0080%, and Cardano has the largest price difference at 0.0498%. The median value of these six trading pairs is 0.0116%. At that time, Bitcoin was quoted at approximately 74,020 euros.
This finding is embarrassing for those who try to explain high card costs in terms of "weak market liquidity". At this time, the market itself has almost zero friction. A transaction volume of 100 euros costs only slightly more than 1 euro cent in the order book. Any overpayments you pay are a premium on the retail price by the provider, not a market defect.
It should be added that we measure the professional order book, not the exchange rate actually used by the card at the time of payment. Therefore, this measurement does not prove how expensive your particular payment is. This figure marks the bottom line of costs, and it makes it clear to anyone claiming 2%, 3%, or 4%: this is a set mark-up, not a naturally occurring premium.
Choose between USD Coin or Bitcoin: Balance determines cost
From this mechanism, you can derive the most important settings for the card. If expenditures are made from the euro balance, no conversion will occur at all. If you spend money from a U.S. dollar stable currency (such as USD Coin), only the currency type changes, while the value of the balance remains basically unchanged. In contrast, if you spend from Bitcoin or Ethereum, you sell part of your position at the day's exchange rate for every cup of coffee you buy.
Independent reviews describe this point exactly the same, even if their data are contradictory: consumption of stablecoins or fiat currencies largely avoids conversion markups, while consumption of volatile cryptocurrencies generates markups every time you make it. Therefore, the selection of balance in the App is a key setting to control card running costs.
ATM cash withdrawals and foreign currencies: Where additional costs are incurred
There are two types of situations that are not within the zero-fee range. Coinbase itself does not charge when withdrawing money from an ATM, but the machine operator has the right to charge. When paying abroad or in a foreign currency, Visa's conversion fee and possible mark-ups in the card program will be superimposed.
This is why the publicly circulated data are so divided. Anyone planning to use the card during the holidays should read the foreign currency rules in the App before departing, rather than relying on third-party reviews.
Holding period and Article 23 of the Income Tax Law: Every card payment is a sale
The second cost area involves taxation. Privately held crypto assets are considered other assets. Surrender it complies with the disposal of Article 23(1)(1)(2) of the German Income Tax Law, and card payment is such surrender. Therefore, every purchase made using the Bitcoin balance constitutes a private disposal.
The key is how long the coins spent are held in the open position. If there is more than one year between acquisition and payment, no matter how large the gain is, it is exempt from tax. If within one year, the proceeds are included in the private disposal income for the year. The threshold of € 1,000 applies here (previously € 600), which is a threshold rather than an exemption: all gains above one euro are subject to tax.
The practical consequence is that if small amounts are deducted from small positions every day, a long list of tax-related events will be generated. Each event requires recording of the acquisition date, acquisition cost, and disposal benefit. See our article on "Every payment made using a crypto credit card is a sale" on how to keep these records clearly; relevant tools can be found in our tax software and portfolio tracker comparisons.
Coinbase 通过卢森堡实体 Coinbase Luxembourg S.A.
None of these numbers could be confirmed from the original source and were contradictory. They represent only one scope rather than fact: card issuance fees are about five euros, foreign currency mark-up rates range from 2.49% to 2.69%, and total conversion costs are as high as about 4%. The only binding number is the number you display in the App before ordering and before making your first payment.
The gap between the nearly 4% mentioned in the comments and the 0.0088% on the order book is at the heart of the problem. This distance shows the space between the market price and the retail price, and explains why two users of the same card can have completely different experiences, depending on what they use to make payments.
Our assessment: Without a stablecoin balance, this card is usually not worth it.
In our opinion, Coinbase Card can be used as a payment method, but is not suitable as an investment tool. Three well-documented points support this view: Coinbase itself does not charge fees for payments, the market environment is almost frictionless (median orderbook spread is 0.0116%), and tax consequences are guided mainly through balance selection.
Coinbase Card:
