Current status of Boka pledge: 2.77% annualized income and 28-day lock-up period
Currently, Polkadot's pledge annualized rate of return is 2.77%, and the exit process takes 28 days. These two numbers determine whether Nominating is worth it to you. Taking 1,000 DOT as an example, a gain of approximately 27.7 DOT can be obtained in one year; if calculated at a price of 1.12 euros, this is equivalent to a gain of approximately 31 euros on the pledged principal of 1,120 euros. However, during the same period, DOT prices could fluctuate more in one day than its eight-month pledge gains.
This article will weigh the relationship between the two: the yield on online payments, the net income after deducting verifier commissions, the minimum participation threshold, and the true cost of the four-week lock-up period. All data are as of October 11, 2026.
Boca pays 2.77% per year: How pledge proceeds are constructed
Pledge rewards do not come from a service provider, but from the agreement itself. Polkadot continues to issue new DOT tokens and allocate them to the Validators responsible for packaging blocks and the nominators who support these Validators. According to Staking Rewards 'data service, as of October 11, Polkadot's reward rate was 2.77% per year, when 913.06 million DOTs were pledged, with a pledge ratio of 53.5%.
This ratio is the key lever for determining the rate of return. Newly issued tokens will be apportioned to each pledged DOT. If the pledge ratio increases, more tokens will share the rewards in the same pool, resulting in a decrease in the yield of a single token; conversely, if the pledge ratio decreases, the yield will increase. Currently, slightly more than half of Polkadot's circulating supply is in pledge, which also maintains current yields.
"Return" describes the DOT-denominated annual growth in your position before deducting commissions. It does not reflect the market price of the token. If you nominate 1,000 DOT, you will hold approximately 1,027 DOT a year later; how much these tokens are worth is a separate issue.
Proof of Nomination Mechanism (NPoS): Your DOT is placed after the verifier
Polkadot uses the Nominated Proof of Stake (NPoS) mechanism to ensure chain security. Verifiers run nodes and generate blocks, while nominees own DOT and can choose up to 16 verifiers to entrust their pledged funds to them. Elections are repeated at each epoch, a process that aims to spread the weight of pledges so that as many validators as possible can receive a similar amount of support.
Your DOTs are always in your control, they are bonded, not transferred. The validator can neither spend nor withdraw these funds. All they can do is make mistakes, and you will share the risk with them. For details, please see the section on "Slashing" below.
The agreement limits the number of nominees considered in each era. Polkadot Wiki pointed out that since the validator election must be completed within the calculation time of a single block, the quota limit is approximately 22,500. If you are not selected, you will not receive any rewards in this era.
Unlock: A 28-day lock-up period locks DOT for four weeks
To get back the pledged funds, you need to initiate the Unbonding process. It would take 28 eras, which means 28 days on the Polkadot network, before DOT became freely usable again. The Wiki shows that the same period applies to direct nominations and joining the Nomination Pools. During these four weeks, you can neither sell these tokens nor send them to other addresses.
This requirement stems from chain safety considerations. Malicious attackers should not be able to transfer capital to safety within seconds after committing evil actions. The waiting period is collateral. For details on how other networks handle such situations and differences in terms of terms, please refer to our comparative analysis of the five network pledge lock-up periods.
During the countdown period, you bear price risk and cannot take action. This is where small gains turn into major trade-offs.
Pledge rewards with fluctuations of 1.98% in a single day exceeding eight months
Break down the annualized rate of return into daily: 2.77% divided by 365 days, which is approximately 0.0076% per day. According to CoinGecko data, in the 24 hours ended October 11, DOT prices fluctuated by 1.98% to close at $1.26 (or € 1.12). The value of price fluctuations on this day is approximately equal to 261 days of pledge rewards, which is slightly more than eight months.
There will be little change for investors who plan to hold DOT for the long term. They view 2.77% as an extra dividend and ignore market fluctuations. However, anyone hoping to sell in the next few weeks will need to trade four weeks of liquidity for the same dividend. With prices that can fluctuate by 2% on calm days, lock-up periods become the more expensive party to the deal.
Pledge pools starting from 1DOT: bypassing the minimum threshold for direct nominations
There are two paths into the pledge space, with very different entry thresholds. Through direct nomination , you need to choose your own validator and the pledge amount must be higher than the so-called "minimum active binding amount." Through the Pledge Pool , you can combine DOT's funds with others; for the purposes of the agreement, the Pledge Pool behaves as a single nominee.
Polkadot Wiki sets the entry threshold for pledge pools to 1 DOT. At current prices, it is only 1.12 euros. For those holding small positions, the pledge pool is almost the only way to participate in the pledge natively without going through the exchange. Pledge pools are non-custodial: DOT remains under your control, and pool operators only ensure that bundled pledged funds are behind active verifiers.
There is a hidden danger in bundling: If the entire pledge pool falls below the minimum pledge requirement, it will be considered inactive and all members will not be able to receive any rewards at the same time. In addition, switching pledge pools requires full unlocking first, and also faces a 28-day waiting period.
Minimum active binding amount: Why the nominee threshold keeps changing
The minimum active binding amount is the amount you must provide in a direct nomination to receive rewards in that era. There is no fixed number in the agreement for understandable reasons: since elections in each era only accommodate about 22,500 nominees, the threshold is created by competition. If many people apply with large amounts of money, the threshold will rise; if money is withdrawn, the threshold will fall.
This has two meanings for investors. First of all, enough pledges today may become insufficient in a few eras, and this is not something you have done wrong. Secondly, before binding a large amount, please be sure to check the current value on the official pledge dashboard. This problem does not exist at the member level for the pledge pool, because the pledge pool as a whole must meet or miss the threshold.
Verifier Commission: How much of the 2.77% will fall into your pocket
Rewards flow to the verifier first. After the verifier deducts his commission , the remaining amount is distributed prorated to all supporters. Polkadot Wiki has a clear description of this, which is why the published network yield is a cap rather than the actual payouts.
In practice, commissions vary greatly. A low-commission verifier will give you almost the full rate of return; a high-commission verifier may withhold a significant share. Since you can choose from up to 16 validators, the end result is a mixture of these rates. Other networks also have gaps between network yields and actual gains received; for example, in the Ethereum Pledge, this difference was recently measured among 14 providers.
Therefore, before nominating, it is worthwhile to carefully examine each candidate's commission rate, uptime, and the amount of pledges already behind it. If you don't want to screen yourself, the alternatives can be found in our comparison of regulated crypto exchanges.
Slashing: When your pledge pays for the verifier's mistake
Punishment refers to the confiscation of part of the pledged capital when the verifier misbehaves. Two typical situations are: a node is unreachable for a long time, or two conflicting blocks are signed. The pledge behind it will also be damaged proportionately.
This is the price your capital pays for chain security. If you give the option to the pledge pool, you will share the risk with all other members. Wiki describes a deferred processing procedure for pledge pools, where forfeited amounts will be apportioned among members.
1.48% inflation and 2.1 billion DOT cap
The source of rewards has changed fundamentally. In the past, Polkadot issued a fixed number of 120 million new DOTs every year. Referendum 1710 was implemented in January 2026, setting a cap of 2.1 billion DOT and adopting a stepped disbursement plan: starting from March 14, 2026, 13.14% will be paid every two years to the remaining distance of the cap. As the circulation supply approaches the upper limit, new additions will decrease.
We can make calculations. CoinGecko shows that the circulation supply is 1.707 billion DOT, which is about 393 million yuan away from the cap. 13.14% means less than 51.7 million DOT in two years, with an average annual rate of approximately 25.8 million. Relative to the circulation supply, this ratio is 1.51%. Staking Rewards measured the inflation rate of 1.48% on the same day, and the voting formula matched the measured value.
Of the approximately 25.8 million new DOTs, arithmetically, approximately 25.3 million are owned by the pledgers, because 2.77% of the 913.06 million pledged DOTs is exactly this number. In contrast, the treasury has only a small balance left, well below the 15% of the old model.
Our assessment: The current true value of Boca Pledge does not lie in the yield of 2.77%, but in its ratio to the dilution rate. Holders who do not participate in the pledge lose approximately 1.51% of the total supply share each year; while those participating in the pledge gain 2.77%, achieving an actual growth of approximately 1.2%. This advantage does exist but is small and is only suitable for positions that are intended to be held for the long term. In contrast, there is price volatility: a one-day volatility of 1.98% can erase this annual advantage in a matter of hours. This article does not constitute a purchase recommendation, and there is still a zeroing risk for any crypto assets.
Pledged through exchanges: Waiting periods are included in the terms of service
Many investors operate through exchanges that provide pledge services rather than nominating themselves. This changes the legal structure behind the gains. Wiki clearly distinguishes between pledge pools and escrow solutions: in the pool, you control the private key; on the exchange, the DOT is stored at the exchange address.
At this point, the agreement no longer sets terms. The payout pace, detention rate and release time are determined by the provider's terms of service. Some exchanges settled and exited faster than 28 days due to internal restructuring; others were slower. For more information on which providers in Germany require licenses for such services, see our introduction of pledges under MiCA.
Taxation of pledged income: receipts, 256 euro threshold and holding period
In Germany, pledged income is usually regarded as "other income" as defined in Article 22 (3) of the Income Tax Act. Taxes are incurred when received, which is the value when DOT credited your account. The law establishes a threshold: if such income is less than € 256 in a calendar year, no income tax will be payable.
This is a threshold, not a tax exemption. The € 255 reward is not subject to tax; the € 256 is fully taxed. At the current yield of 2.77% and a price of 1.12 euros, you hit that threshold around when you pledged 8,250 DOT (worth just over 9,200 euros). Income below this amount is itself tax-free, provided you have no other such income in the same year.
Another issue is when DOT can be sold duty-free. This applies to Article 23 of the Income Tax Act, which involves a one-year period for private disposals and a separate threshold of € 1,000 per year. The pitfalls between receipts and sales are detailed in our introduction of German pledges and taxes; we have separately listed the two most common tax cases for the sale of tokens received.
Setting up a Boka Pledge: An Operating Guide from Purchase to Nomination
Native pledges require DOT to be located in your own address, not an exchange account. The process is to transfer purchased tokens through a Polkadot wallet, and then choose to pledge pool or direct nomination. The official pledge dashboard does not require programming knowledge to implement these two paths.
Before binding, record three values: the current minimum active binding amount, the validator commission you plan to choose, and the date you bind. This last point may seem trivial, but it determines your tax return and the starting point for the 28-day countdown if you want to quit.
At the same time, some positions remain unchanged. If you bind all funds, once the market or personal situation changes, you will face a dilemma that you cannot respond to for four weeks.
Boca Pledge Summary: 28 days locked in against 2.77% annualized earnings
Data on the table: 2.77% earnings, 1.51% dilution, approximately 1.2% real growth, facing 28 days of no access, and 2% price fluctuations on ordinary days. Decision-making from here takes three steps:
- Determine the purchase path and custody method. Native nominations require your own address. See our comparison of the best crypto exchanges where to obtain DOT in Germany, what terms and which venues are regulated.
- Decide whether to choose a pledge pool or direct nomination. When it is below the minimum active binding amount, the pledge pool starts from 1DOT. Above this threshold, commissions need to be reviewed, and for escrow products, our pledge platform overview helps compare terms.
- 从一开始就记录收据。 每一笔入账都需要日期和价格,否则未来的256欧元阈值将成为估算值。相关工具详见我们对税务软件和投资组合跟踪器的比较。
