Large-scale global operation to expose illegal cryptocurrency activities

The large-scale global operation led by Interpol and codenamed \"Operation 2026\" focuses on global fraud networks and activities involving the laundering of criminal proceeds. The major crackdown covered 97 countries, arrested a total of 5811 people and seized illegal assets worth US$293 million. In addition, the operation found up to 142,000 fraud victims worldwide.

What happened in Thailand?

In Thailand, authorities have arrested two suspects involved in a major cryptocurrency fraud case. A young suspect as young as 20 years old allegedly took control of a digital wallet that handled more than $122.5 million in funds, mainly from deceptive online dating scams. These funds are transferred through multiple cryptocurrencies and covered up using cross-chain token exchanges, making tracking the ultimate destination of illegal funds complicated.

This complexity stems from the ability to seamlessly transfer digital assets between different blockchain networks, which both facilitates legal transfers and provides cover for criminals trying to launder money. Interpol pointed out that criminals are increasingly using rapid blockchain token exchanges to mislead investigators through multiple layers of transactions.

How will the 2026 Operation Chuguang be effective?

Operation Chuguang 2026 was launched from January to April and a total of 31,014 bank accounts were frozen. During this period, authorities reviewed more than 152,000 cases and used the I-GRIP payment monitoring tool to regulate the flow of fiat and digital currencies. The tool helps quickly intercept and review suspicious financial transfers.

The action covers 97 countries and regions.

About 5,811 suspects were detained.

The total assets seized reached US$293 million.

More than 142,000 victims have been identified worldwide.

31,014 accounts were frozen during the operation.

Extensive cross-border cooperation highlights the growing convergence of cryptocurrency fraud with larger criminal networks. The United Nations points out that the illicit financial flows generated by these networks are expected to reach tens of billions of dollars. The focus of these actions has clearly shifted to Southeast Asia and are clearly linked to human trafficking and financial fraud schemes. Interpol continues to highlight the dangers of these complex crimes, and blockchain analysis shows that fraudulent cryptocurrency transactions will surge by 2025. The involvement of advanced phishing and artificial intelligence technologies has further exacerbated the problem, requiring broader international cooperation and sharper investigative tools.
